Synopsis
Set in the Joseon dynasty, two brothers find themselves falling in love with a female shaman, who does not remember her noble past. Lee Hwon is the Crown Prince, but he finds the role a burden to bear. He would rather have his older, more talented brother Yang Myung play the role, but because Yang Myung is an illegitimate child he has no right to the crown. When Lee Hwon tries to escape the palace walls for a little adventure, he encounters Heo Yeon Woo, the intelligent daughter of a nobleman. It's love at first sight for him, but Lee Hwon is also set to marry another nobleman's daughter, Bo Kyung. Little does Hwon realize, but Yang Myung is also falling for Yeon Woo.

I am never a big fan of historical period drama. I find the storyline draggy and confusing at times, for example Jewel In The Palace. The only drama about palace which I like is Princess Hour and technically speaking it is not a period drama. Other than that, I seldom watch period drama about dynasty. I think the reason why I am reviewing this drama that was broadcasted in 2012 is because of Kim Soo Hyun whom I adores in - My Love From The Stars.
Despite my initial reservation about period drama, I was attracted to this show because of Kim Soo Hyun. I remembered him as a fine actor in Dream High. In addition, this drama received good reviews and ratings from the audience. Since it is a popular drama, I think it is worth watching to see how much I adore this drama. The original soundtrack is coincidentally sang by Lyn title - Back to the time. This song matches the drama perfectly.
Kim Soo Hyun acting has improved through these years. He is able make a switch between boyish and manly. From the appearance, the king he portrays seem to be a 'useless' king who is playful. He even pretended to be clueless infront of the crafty ministers. Actually, King Lee Hwon is a wise and sentimental man who cannot forget his first love. He is definitely not blind about the politics behind all the happenings in the palace since he grew up in this type of environment. There are many things he need to face as a King. Kim Soo Hyun is able to protray those emotions and tensions very well. He fit into the role of a king with great authority and wisdom.
Han Ga-In portrays the 'moon' Yeon Woo that Lee Hwon missed dearly. She is a kind hearted lady with great wisdom to be a Queen. Unfortunately, she was sabotaged by the enemies in the palace. Eventually, she was rescued by a shaman who processes divine power. However, Yeon Woo had lost her memory. Can she remember the love she shared with the King? How can the two lovebirds overcome the odds against them and finally be together?

Other than the main leads, I am impressed with other characters such as the King personal attendant and prince Yang Myung. Their acting was a delight in this show. As usual, there were many politics, black magic, spells, siblings rivalry and people backstabbing each other in order to gain power and control.
From the beginning to the end, I am satisfied with the storyline and the acting. There were many memorable scenes which will give a lasting impression on this drama. Not forgetting the young actors and actresses who did really well in this drama portraying the younger teenage version of the main characters.
In conclusion, The Moon that embraces the Sun revolves around the topic of the Sun (King) and the Moon (Queen) that was clearly narrated at the beginning of the show. After watching this show, I am happy to say that my time was not wasted on this drama.
