Drama Queen review: Apple in your eye (妹妹)

Starring: Amber An, Lan Cheng Long (Blue Lan)

Storyline: The story is about Zhou Ji Wei (Amber An) always wanting to be Dai Yao Qi (Blue Lan) sister because his grandmother treated her like a princess. At home, she is the unwanted third daughter of the family. They have hope for a boy but was disappointed that they gave birth to a girl again. Zhou Ji Wei begin to realize that she harbored a crush on her 'brother' Dai Yao Qi. However, Dai Yao Qi always treated her like a younger sister, besides he already fall in love with another woman. What is Zhou Ji Wei going to do?

My thoughts

Have you ever experience being turned off by a drama within the first thirty minutes of the show? Yes, I feel my hand reaching out for the remote controller to switch channel. This was my first thought when I watched this drama. At the beginning, I think the child actor and actress were cute and natural. However, that cannot be said about the adult actor and actress when the story progressed to their teenage and adults years.

It had been a long time since any Taiwanese idol drama caught my attention. There were quite a few good idol drama such as Mischievous Kiss, Prince turn to frog, Magician of Love, devil besides you, Endless love and the list goes on. However, I am quite disappointed with this idol drama. There are a few reasons why I dislike this drama.

First of all, the main lead actor and actress were not attractive enough. To some people, they are good looking since beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. However, I just cannot see or feel their chemistry yet. At least not in the first episode and honestly I don't think there will be much inprovement from here.

Secondly, Amber An is too old to act cute. Let's face it, she may be the ideal girl for many men but I really do not think that she is that pretty in a girl's perspective. It is worse when she acted childishly and her concept of acting is plain awful. In fact, I think she look ugly when she cries and pout her lips. Sorry to all her fans, she simply do not have the charisma to be the lead actress. Perhaps she is the only taiwanese actress that I find annoying when she tries to act. Overacting can become irritating too, keep that in mind Amber An.

Blue Lan is a fine actor, although his earlier works were mainly movies. He seldom acted in Idol drama, that is the reason why I am curious about his acting skills in this idol drama. In my opinion, Blue is good at protraying this character. Dai Yao Qi is rebellious, tough and cheekily playful in appearance, those are what he wanted others to see on the outside. However, he has a sensitive and gentle personality which he hides it inside his heart. Blue Lan did moderately well with his devil-may-care attitude in the first episode. Naturally my eyes were on him since he does attracts my attention.

I know the scriptwriter of this drama is well known for her previous works such as In time with you. However, I think this drama is pretty much predictable. I am not a fan of the writer work too. With a 14 episodes, it may not be too bad to sail through the storm. In my opinion, I do not see the need to have so many episodes. Maybe the rest of the episodes will get better, but for now I do not think that I will chase this idol drama.

Perhaps one of these days I may continue to watch it during my free time or when I am really bored. That is solely because I am curious about the storyline. For all the Amber An fans, this drama may be tailor made just for you. As for me, I will give it a pass for now. It seems like a waste of time to me since there are better drama to watch. Looking at the poster above, I can't help but feel that both of the main leads were overage students. Honestly, they really look too matured for high school students. What a crappy show! (Rolled my eyes)

The two child actors were cute and natural in their acting compared to the adult actors and actresses. Sometimes, these children knows more about acting than some adult actress who really tries too hard to act.

  1. I'd be interested in hearing if you change your mind on this drama. I've found it really surprising and I like the main/supporting actors. And of course I love Mag Hsu's stories. I'm hooked! ^_^

  3. I just finished the drama today, and I agree that Amber An looks too old and I don't think she is attractive in the drama however she is definitely pretty otherwise in real life (makeup perhaps?) I found Blue Lan extremely attractive and fit for the role and enjoyed the drama because of him. It gets a bit long-winded and repetitive but the ending is not what you would expect, so I suggest you give it another go maybe :)
