Drama Review: It’s Okay To Not Be Okay Episode 1

Summary

An animation of our main character, Ko Mun Yeong, as a little child opens the narrative. She was described as a monster that terrorised everyone in her vicinity. She was lonely most of the time, but after saving a youngster from drowning one day, he began to follow her. The girl was then warned by a frightful, eerie voice to keep in mind that she is a monster. As she responded, our female heroine transformed into a stunning woman. "Yes, mother."

Let's now introduce our male lead, Moon Gang Tae, who works as a qualified hospital carer. He has an older brother with autism. On this particular day, his brother Moon Sang Tae had created a stir at work. Moon Gang Tae must therefore come and bring his brother home. Autism spectrum disorder affects Moon Sang Tae.In general, he has no trouble taking care of himself, but he is sensitive about his hair and detests being touched. Sang Tae has been watching his brother's facial expressions constantly.

The young girl went on to become Ko Mun Yeong, the author of grim fairy tales. She was cutting his steak while sitting by herself in a peaceful area of the restaurant. When a small admirer saw her, the mother requested a photo and a signature. She was upset when the girl complimented Ko Mun Yeong on her princess-like beauty, telling her that in her fairy tale book, the attractive character is always the witch. During the photo shoot, it makes the girl nervous. When Sang In, Ko Mun Yeong's manager, arrived to pick up Mun Yeong for her fairytale recitation, she asked that she change into something more colourful. Mun Yeong refused to comply and left the restaurant with the steak knife, which she enjoys due of its sharpness. Mun Yeong "stole" the knife from the steakhouse, and Sang In has to pay for it.

Moon Gang Tae is back at the hospital, changing into his uniform. His muscular body is covered in bruises and scrapes, which are likely caused by the risks associated with his job as a carer. In an attempt to calm down a distraught patient who was gorging herself on food, Gang Tae sought to stop her vomit. Tolerating it, Gang Tae pictured himself in a bed of roses. The patient then smacked Gang Tae across the face and urged him to stop wearing that fake grin because it made her feel repulsed.

Because Gang Tae seemed to be constantly switching jobs, his coworkers at the hospital were interested in him. A mentally ill patient was once brought to the hospital after attempting to murder both himself and his daughter. Moon Gang Tae, however, gave his brother a call to see how he was doing. "Do you like me or Ko Moon Yeong?" he questioned his brother. His brother hung up the phone without answering.

Moon Gang Tae happened upon children's book author Ko Mun Yeong on the hospital rooftop. His brother is a huge fan of Ko Moon Yeong's books, but he is unaware of this. Mun Yeong lit a cigarette in the non-smoking area, and he advised her to extinguish it. "Do you believe in destiny?" she asked, moving forward to meet his eyes. She went on, "Destiny is when you need that person and he or she appeared right in front of you." She dropped the cigarette she was carrying into the Gang Tae coffee cup before leaving. Angrily, Gang Tae smashed the cup he was holding.

Mun Yeong was reciting her fairy story at the hospital recitation hall. when there was an emergency, the lights went out, and everyone was instructed to vacate the hall. It turns out that a mentally ill person came here to look for his daughter after escaping. The man's desire to fight his daughter to death was evident to Ko Mun Yeong. Instead, the man struggled with her after she assisted the daughter in escaping. Mun Yeong had a memory of his father attempting to coerce her as a young girl. She was devastated by the memories, which made her laugh and cry. Just in time, Gang Tae showed up and yanked the man away. Mun Yeung plans to use a steak knife to assault the patient in retaliation. Gang Tae used his bare hand to stop her. They gazed intently into one another's eyes. He required sutures at the medical centre when the knife wounded his palm.

The hospital must take responsibility for the incident's lack of vigilance, and the hospital director chose to use Gang Tae as a scapegoat because of his employment history, which reveals that he changes jobs frequently—from a few months to a year. He will be compensated financially for assuming this duty in lieu of the intern. When Gang Tae became agitated, his friend Jae Su arrived on his motorbike to pick him up.

Ko Mun Yeong was a childhood friend of Juri, who worked at Ok Mental Hospital. For her father, who is admitted to Ok Hospital as a mental patient, she was assigned to go to Moon Yeong and sign some paperwork. Following their encounter, she fell to the ground in terror of Ko Mun Yeung. Gang Tae neglected to ask Ko Mun Yeong for her autograph, so Jae Su offered to fake it in order to trick Sang Tae. However, Sang Tae saw right through it and began to act out. They made an effort to quiet and soothe him.

Mun Yeong slept on the bed at night, clutching the family portrait, thinking about her trauma. At night, Gang Tae was also awake, reflecting on what had transpired. As Mun Yeong lay in her hotel bed, she thought of Gang Tae's stunning eyes. Gang Tae, unable to sleep, got up and read The Boy Who Feeded on Nightmares by Ko Mun Yeong. When he suddenly dreamed of the butterflies chasing him, his sibling was fast asleep. Everyone was awakened by his cry. When Mun Yeong stabbed Sang In in the hand, he sent Gang Tae a note attempting to buy him off from pursuing the case.

Everyone in the company began to conceal everything that was sharp from Mun Yeong when she arrived with her stylish clothing. She grabbed the sharp paper opener she spotted on the desk. She discovered Gang Tae wearing a gigolo outfit and reading one of her books on her way to work. Her eyes, according to Gang Tae, make him think of a girl he liked as a boy. They gazed intently into one another's eyes. The way Gang Tae gazed at Mun Yeong's stunning lips had my heart skip a beat.

My thoughts

When this drama initially debuted on Netflix in 2020, I watched it and found it to be rather entertaining. We were attempting to resume our regular lives following the pandemic during the depressing COVID-19 era. I was only reminded to see Kim Soo Hyun's earlier work after watching Queen of Tears. At that point, my sister suggested that I watch this drama because it's really good. I ultimately rewatched this drama and experienced it on a deeper level.

When my father and I watched this drama together, he said that Juri must be the good girl and Ko Moon Yeong must be the villain. How could he be mistaken? I explained to her that Ko Mun Yeong is the real female lead. I had to explain to him that Ko Mun Yeong is truly dealing with childhood trauma, which is the reason behind her behaviour. He made this judgement based on her character.

As a huge lover of animation, I thought the utilisation of this technique fit the drama's mood. Like Ko Mun Yeong stated, It's Okay To Not Be Okay is a reflection of the reality of our lives and has a connection to various fairytale tales. Her composition of the fairytale novels matched her perception of the world as being gloomy and frigid. The way the characters were presented to us was excellent, and it was immediately apparent that everyone of the key characters had personal problems and baggage that they carried into adulthood.

I understand Moon Gang Tae's situation as the only person taking care of his older brother. He seems to maintain his smile to maintain the tranquilly of the situation. In this episode, his friend Jae Su pointed out that the smile resembles that of a joker. When Gang Tae took care of his sibling, I could feel his anguish and patience right away. I got a peek of Ko Mun Yeong's violent behaviour in this episode, and I assumed it had something to do with her childhood and family. Although she was diagnosed with antisocial disorder, I believe that underlying her icy demeanour lies a soft heart. I hoped Ko Mun Yeong's medical diagnosis would turn out to be incorrect. With those who genuinely care about her, she ought to be able to express and experience love. I am certain that they will be each other's soulmates and life partners when Mun Yeong talks about fate.

This drama presented the Boy who fed on nightmares, and I found the plot to be really compelling. I learnt how to confront and overcome my trauma from this book. Your soul will only mature as an adult after you conquer it. This encourages people to confront their problems head-on rather than run away from them. I believe Moon Gang Tae made the decision to confront his issue rather than flee like a coward after reading this book. In addition, I feel sorry for the girl whose father chose to end his own life following his unsuccessful attempt to murder his daughter. Mental health problems are quite real and can occur in any kind of circumstance. Instead of trying to ignore these social challenges, it is time for us to take notice of them.
