Big Bang, EXILE snag nominations in MTV Europe Music Awards

Boys bands Big Bang of South Korea and EXILE of Japan bagged nominations in the MTV Europe Music Awards 2011.

The two and five other singers are nominated in the Worldwide Act Asia Pacific category. Other nominees are Indonesia’s Agnes Monica, Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, Chinese pop singer Jane Zhang, and Australian singers Sia and Gotye.

Lady Gaga has the most number of nominations with six, followed by Bruno Mars and Katy Perry with four each. Adele, Justin Bieber and Thirty Seconds to Mars are up for three awards each.

In the Best Song category, the nominees are Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep,” Bruno Mars’ “Grenade,” Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull’s “On The Floor,” Katy Perry’s “Firework,” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”

The MTV EMA describes Big Bang as the “hottest band in Korea.”

“BIG BANG became the most influential artist in Korea. Their latest EP ‘Tonight’ went on to become a chart-topper upon its release on many Korean music charts. The group received the awards for Best Pop Video and Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2010,” the MTV EMA said.

On the other hand, EXILE, composed of 14 members, is one of the most popular bands in Japan, selling 17 million records in Japan to date.

EXILE won the Video and Album of the Year in the MTV Video Music Awards Japan for 2010.

Chou is a talented musician that has sold millions of copies of his records.

“His 2000 debut album ‘Jay’ took away Best Album honors at the Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan, followed by five awards (including Best Album, Best Composer and Best Producer) the following year for his second album, ‘Fantasy.' From 2004 to 2008, he was awarded the title of Best Selling Artist in China by the coveted World Music Awards,” the MTV EMA said.

The singer also crossed over to acting. He played Kato in the Hollywood movie “The Green Hornet” for which he was nominated in the Best Breakthrough Performance category in the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, according to MTV EMA.

Monica is a popular singer who “has gained commercial success in many countries, including her homeland Indonesia, as well as Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, and even the Netherlands.”

On the other hand, Zhang has released five albums. She won as China’s Most Popular Female Artist in the Hong Kong TVB8 Awards in 2007.

Sia is an Australian singer that has released five studio albums. In 2009, Sia worked with Christina Aguilera and Australian songwriter Simon Dixon to write “Bound to You” for the film “Burlesque." The song earned nomination in the Best Original Song in the 2010 Golden Globe Awards.

Gotye won as best male artist in 2007 in the Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards. The 18th MTV EMA will be broadcast live on Nov. 6 from Belfast’s Odyssey Arena.
