Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 3 Part III

Ruoxi hesitates at the doorway into Roulan's quarters, but musters her courage and enters calling out to her sister, only to get ignored. Despite the cold shoulder that Roulan is giving her, Rouxi tries to get her sister's attention by approaching her sister saying, "Mother passed away when I was born and ever since I was a child, father has labelled me a troublemaker. The other brothers and sisters, although we have the same father and they treat me well, our mothers are different. Only you share the same mother as me. As my older sister, you have always been there for me and have never forsaken me showing me concern, love and patience. I know you care for me and I made a mistake. Please hit me or scold me, just don't ignore me because I only have you."

Touched by what her younger sister has said, Roulan relents and the two girls make up. She reminds Rouxi that although she is forgiven, she has to change her fiery temper and avoid such incidents that could cost her her life. Rouxi admits her mistake and the sisters end on a happy note.

Not long after, Rouxi is seen happily climbing a ladder eagerly wanting to hang a lantern, with the servants all urging her to come down to avoid injuring herself. She manages to successfully hang the lantern and climb down the ladder, but not without Roulan chiding her that it was not long ago that Rouxi said she has learnt her lesson but here she is up to her usual antics again!

Ruolan worries about how Ruxi will act when she enters the palace. To which Ruoxi exclaims in surprise, asking if it is time for the royal inspections already. To her relief, it turns out that the Emperor is hosting a Mid Autumn gathering, all the princes and family have been invited and the 8th prince has been asked to bring Ruoxi. Rouxi realizes that her incident has really made her famous and tries to talk her way out of attending the event to no avail, it is an imperial order to which she must comply.

Left with no choice, Rouxi concedes defeat and takes etiquette lessons from Roulan in hopes of not embarrassing herself. So she ends up reciting all the rules and balancing a cup on her head, with Ruolan watching her nervously and Qiaohui smiling at Rouxi's attempts to stay balanced. Tired and worn out, Rouxi begs for a break and instantly plops into a chair in an unflattering pose while Roulan gives her a disapproving look... and her lessons continue.

It is soon time for the gathering and in the palace, when the Emperor is announced everyone kneels. Kangxi looks over the heads and says that the Mid-autumn is a good time to celebrate with family. He asks them to enjoy and be at ease. Rouxi secretly raises her head to take a peek at the court before hastily looking down once more.

Suddenly, Kang Xi points in Rouxi's direction and shouts, "You!" Instantly all the princes in front of her turn back and step aside, leaving Rou Xi stands in the half circle. Startled, Rouxi is dumbfounded until Roulan prompts her to step forward and greet the emperor.

The emperor asks if she is the girl that is knoen as 'Daredevil 13th Sister' Maertai Rouxi to which she answers. He asks given her nickname why is it that she is nervous to meet him. Rouxi answers that she is too awed by his majestic presence, but he asks her if it is because she fears the power he wields. It is a tense moment but Rouxi manages to answer and diffuse the tense atmosphere, even making the emperor laugh (much to Ming Yu's chagrin).

Kangxi smiles and says that he has grown accustomed to being compared to the Yao, Shun, Yu, and Tang rulers and finds Ruoxi’s words refreshing. He leans forward, examining her and says that she is not only someone who takes risks but also someone who has experience and commands her to be rewarded.

The imperial family soon gathers on the patio, with the princes on the upper tier while the wives sit below them. Kangxi tells his sons that his empire is like a family. Without family, there will be no empire. If there is unrest in the imperial family, this will lead to a unstable country. He asks his sons to remember to value the relationships between the officials and the brothers.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 3 Part II

Rouxi shivers under the blanket once she is back in her room. When the maids serve her ginger soup to keep her warm, she asks if her sister came by and if she said anything. The maids shake their heads and Rouxi asks if she was frightening in the afternoon. Quihui affirms that thought and Rouxi says that Roulan must be really angry, but her anger should dissipate with time.

The next day when Rouxi is on her way to visit Roulan, all the servants that she encounters shun her and move away quickly after greeting her. Rouxi attempts to appease her sister fails as Roulan ignores Rouxi's attempts, frustrating Rouxi.

Rouxi hides in a corner of the garden, pluckinh petals off a flower in frustration when the 10th and 14th princes find her. The 14th prince asks her about her expressions and she replies,  “The look of a container that has been broken.” Both princes are amused and the 10th prince states that he thought Ruoxi has always been fierce towards him, but now he realises that she is actually quite good to him, earning him a thrown flower from a peeved Rouxi.

The 14th prince adds on sighing that he thought that Rouxi was an elegant lady when he first saw her, but it is a pity. Rouxi wonders what the 14th prince means and looks in his direction. He explains that her fame since yesterday's incident at the 10th prince celebration has earned her the nickname ‘Daredevil 13th Sister’.

Ruoxi sighs as she realises that bad news spreads like wildfire, while good news hardly have the same effect. The 14th prince continues and says that the 13th prince has been dragged into this incident as well. The other princes and nobles of the court tease the 13th prince about the origins of his new 13th sister.

Just as Rouxi is starting to get nervous and worried about the implications of her actions, a servants run up to her and informs her that the 8th prince wants to see her. Seeing her worried face, both princes promise her that they will put in a good word for her and ask for leniency if necessary. Their gesture lightens her mood a little.

Rouxi reaches the 8th prince's study and stands in front of the 8th prince’s table while he discusses that day’s court with the10th and 14th princes. He seems to be ignoring Ruoxi, concentrating on the incident in court.

After standing for a considerable amount of time, Ruoxi's legs start to ache and she wobbles on her feet, first standing on one foot while supporting with the front of her heeled shoe; switching over as her legs get tired. While the 10th prince keeps glancing at Ruoxi, the 14th prince calmly engages the 8th prince. A servant soon enters to announce dinner time, and the 8th prince invites his two brothers to stay for dinner.

As they walk towards the entrance, the 8th prince asks his brothers to go ahead first. The 10th prince is anxious and suggests leaving together, but finally relents and leaves Ruoxi with his older brother. Biting her lip, Ruoxi looks down at the ground as the 8th prince approaches her. He asks her to lift her head and looks her in the eyes. Ruoxi gazes back and startled by his expression, she takes a step back. 8th laughs and asks “Where has that day’s chilli-hot daring gone to?” and walks away.

His actions confuse Rouxi. The 8th prince looks back and asks if she still wants to continue standing. He than instructs that Rouxi be sent back to Rou;an's quarters. So Rouxi hobbles back to her sister's place, not sure if this is the end of the matter or if it is just a hiatus before he will deal with her.

On the way to Roulan's place, Ruoxi sees the 10th and 14th princes again. The 10th prince asks how she is and she tricks him with a sad face. He is about to confront the 8th prince when she pulls back and starts to chuckle together with the 14th prince who realized she was tricking the 10th prince.

Realizing what is going on, the 10th prince pouts at the two of them, scolding Ruoxi and emphasizing that his worry apparently without cause. They apologise to the 10th prince, and Ruoxi shows that she  is a little miffed at the 14th prince for not putting in a word like he had promised earlier. However, the 14th prince explains that his older brother is well known for his courtesy to everyone. If the 8th prince had been polite to Rouxi, treating her as if nothing had happened, then he would have a reason to try and find a way to ask for leniency on her behalf. But seeing that she was ignored and made to stand for such a long time,  he realized that there was no need for him to help.

The 10th prince thinks for a moment and agrees, chiding the 14th prince for not explaining earlier. While the 14th prince grins and says that he wanted to see Rouxi and the 10th prince reactions.  wants The 10th prince warns the 14th prince that he will get him back, and the 14th prince just laughs and tells the 10th prince that since he has seen Ruoxi all fine and well, it is time for them to head to their dinner appointment with the 8th prince.

Before Ruoxi urges them to go for the dinner, she asks how the Gorolo family reacted to the incident. The 14th prince assures Ruoxi that the 8th prince will take care of it, adding that she should get a servant to massage her legs. So as the prince head to their dinner, Rouxi hobbles over to her sister's place.

Upon seeing Rouxi, Roulan orders that dinner be served, but a servant arrives with food from the 8th prince for Rouxi. Rouxi asks Qiaohui if her sister is still angry with her and she get a nod. Wanting to appease her sister, Rouxi attempts to get the 8th prince help, but he replies that he cannot help her in this matter. Only the person who made the knot, can undo the knot.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 3 Part I

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) > Episode 3 Part I

Entrance by the “Happy Birthday” song, the 10th prince asks what is the song, and Rouxi explains to him that is is a song for birthdays and that it is the Maertai stlye. He asks her to sing the song for him again. Unbeknownst to them, the 13th and 14th princes step into the pavilion. The 14th princes asks when would he get to hear Rouxi sing the song for him. The 14th prince grins at the 10th prince stating that he now knows why the 10th prince was missing, enjoying his own little ‘celebration’ at the pavilion.

Embarrassed, the 10th prince tries to defend himself, saying that he wanted to take a break from the drinking as it was getting too much for him, so he visit the pavilion with Rouxi. But the 14th prince retorts cheekily that it was not the wine but an overdose of happiness that was too much for him. The 10th prince glances nervously at Rouxi before glaring at his brother.

At his glare, the 13th and 14th princes look at each other and proclaim cheekily, “The 10th prince is anxious. He’s not happy already”. With that the 13th prince suggests that they shall not disturb them anymore and enjoy the scenery around them instead. But Rouxi quickly excuses herself and scurries away. The 13th prince holds the 10th prince back when the latter attempts to stop Rouxi, urging his brother not to be anxious.

Rouxi, although managing to get away from the awkward situation, encounters Mingyu who blocks her way. Mingyu accuses Rouxi of not looking where she walks. Wanting to avoid a confrontation on the 10th prince’s birthday, Rouxi glares at Mingyu but restraints herself and moves in the other direction. However, Mingyu makes things difficult for her and steps in front of her again, blocking her path. Mingyu remarks that Rouxi’s action is rude and does not reflect well on her parent’s. Offended, Rouxi retorts that the pot is calling the kettle black.

Indignant, Mingyu snaps, “ You are you and I am myself. At least I have parents to bring be up properly, unlike you. There’s nothing to even compare!” Holding in her temper, Rouxi makes another attempt to walk away, but Mingyu blocks her path again. Frustrated, Rouxi confronts Mingyu and asks her what exactly does she want. Mingyu retorts that she is just like her sister, both are ignorant ad common as livestock. This comment pushes Rouxi to hold in her resolve to retaliate, she asks Mingyu where did Mingyu get this from. But Mingyu just shrugs it off and just states that both sisters are the same, that they are women of low-class going around seducing men.

Enraged, Rouxi slaps Mingyu. Both parties are shocked, but before Rouxi can react, Mingyu lunges forward and tries to slap her back but it fails as Rouxi easier dodges the “attack”. And soon, both girls end up in a cat-fight which causes a commotion loud enough to halt the celebration activites. Both girls are so into the fight that they are oblivious to their surroundings. Rouxi ends up giving Mingyu a head-butt, which lands the two of them into the pond. All the princes call out Rouxi’s name and show more concern for her than Mingyu.

With the girls struggling in the pond, the 13th and 14th prince jump into the pond to rescue the girls. As soon as they are on dry ground, Rouxi is in a better condition than Mingyu. When Roulan tries to show her concern, Mingyu pushes her away causing her to fall and starts to cry. Seeing her sister on the ground, Rouxi lunges forward but is soon stopped by the 10th prince and her sister, who orders her to stand back.

Mingyu tries to complain to the 8th prince, but he silences her sternly. Annoyed, Mingyu starts to cry uncontrollably while the on looking crowd are at a loss at how to stop her from wailing. Still caught up in her anger, Rouxi flashes her anger at Mingyu by approaching Mingyu and commands the wailing girl to shut up, but she wails even louder. Incensed, Rouxi points a finger in Mingyu’s direction and should in an even louder voice than before, her fiercenss stuns Mingyu into silence. The onlookers are equally stunned and at a loss on how to break the heavy atmosphere. But a few seconds later, the tension is broken but the Crown Prince who laughs and exclaims that Rouxi is the female version of the 13th prince, daring and straight forward. With that the tension is broken and everyone starts to laugh. The Crown Prince disperses the crowd and tells everyone to continue on with the celebrations.

Realizing the mess that she has gotten herself into, Rouxi hangs her head in shame and looks nervously at her sister, who exudes anger. Rouxi reaches out for Roulan’s hand and attempts to apologize, but she is snubbed.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 2 Final Part

Soon it is time for the 10th prince’s birthday, and Rouxi is racking her brains on what to wear. She wants to wear something striking and festive at the same time, and so she settles for a red outfit after trying countless of previous outfits. Happy with her choice, she runs to her sister to show off her makeup and outfit, to which Roulan smiles and praises her effort. Just as the sisters are having a good moment, Minghui arrives with her entourage.

Mingyu complains about the arrangement just as Ruo Lan is about to step forward to greet Minghui. Mingyu continues to mock the simple layout and preparation claiming that they would have made it grander. Ruolan explains that the arrangements were made according to the 8th prince’s instructions: to make it a comfortable setting for family to relax and enjoy themselves. Mingyu feigns an apology, claiming that the Gorolo sisters are straight forward people who do not know how to sugarcoat their words. Minghui rebukes Mingyu, saying she would not like to upset the 8th prince by her words.

The princes enter the courtyard, interrupting them. Everyone closes in on the princes and greets them. When the 10th prince compliments Mingyu, she is happy. The 12th prince notices Rouxi and asks, “Which fairy has descended from the heaven?” He exclaims after a moment, “So this must be the Rouxi that 10th often talks about?” Mingyu pouts when all eyes are pulled in Rouxi’s direction.

The 10th prince happily grins when all eyes are on Rouxi. At this moment the 14th prince asks the 12th prince how he knows that this is Rouxi. The 12th prince replies that the other princes all had mentioned a beautiful lady living in the 8th prince’s household, adding that anyone could see which of the women present matches fits that description.

Noticing her outfit and makeup, the 10th prince indicates his approval and Ruo Xi grins back, approving his perception. Their easy camaraderie makes the people around them assume that they have feelings for each other. He compliments the layout for his celebration and credits Ruoxi, but the 8th prince corrects him, saying it is all Ruolan’s efforts. Seeing everyone apprive the sisters, Minghui asks to be excused, claiming a slight illness. Glancing at Ruolan, the 8th prince allows his first wife to return to her room.

By this time most of the princes have arrived, except for the Crown Prince and 13th have arrived. So the princes decide to have tea while waiting for their arrival. The 10th prince loudly declares that he will drink more than the 13th prince this time/ But the 8th prince laughs, saying that he would not be able to out drink ‘Risk-taker 13th’. The 14th prince agrees, adding that even the Hades King is afraid of the risk-taking and daring prince.

Seeing the closeness of the brothers, the tragic fates (from history) of the princes in the future brings tears to Rouxi. Both the 10th and 14th prince would be confined while the 9th and 8th princes die from poison. Concerned, Qiaohui nudges her, but she changes the topic saying that she is hungry. Qiaohui smiles and offers to go and get her food. Soon she returns to Rouxi’s room with a tray of snacks.

Rouxi expresses her dissatisfaction about Mingyu, and Qiaohui explains that the Gorolo sisters’ mother is Kangxi’s cousin, while their father is a highly placed noble. In addition, Minghui being the 8th prince’s main wife, increases the nobility of Mingyu. Ruo Xi snorts, “So what. What can she do to me?” Qiaohui sighs at Ruoxi’s competitive streak, hoping that nothing else would happen since she has already been given a lesson. “Lesson?” asks Ruoxi, surprised. Qiao Hui’s eyes widen realizing her slip of tongue. Ruoxi says that she realizes that the fall was not an accident, and Qiaohui nervously laughs and turns away, saying she id not say anything.

Ruo Xi saunters out of the room, biting into her pastry, and pauses when she spots the 4th prince across the courtyard. He also notices her as he stands outside the rooms reserved for the male guests. As he continues to watch her, she becomes conscious of her movements. There is a slight almost smile in his expression when Ruoxi fidgets, shuffling her feet before giving a slight nod acknowledging the prince. She is nervous around him because she knows that he is the future king.

The 13th prince mentions that Rouxi is exceptional and uncommon, praising her beauty. The 8th prince waives off his compliment and says that the 10th prince is to out drink him. So the 13th prince proposes that everyone drink and get drunk together! An idea that is gladly received and promptly acted on. While the princes drink, Rouxi watches the the opera in boredom, while the males compete in their own drinking contest. The Crown Prince arrives and is announced.

After all the formalities, the Crown Prince declares that he has a special gift for 10th, a jade ruyi which is tribute to their father. The 10th prince is pleased, but the 4th princes steps forward, expressing his fear that their father would be upset if the ruyi is gifted in such a manner. The 9th prince glances at the 14th prince, flattering the Crown Prince saying that anyone else would be in trouble but certainly not the emperor’s beloved son. The 4th prince observes the others even as the 8th prince tries to dissuade the 10th Prince from accepting the gift. The13th prince tries to defuse the situation by suggesting that the 10th prince would certainly refuse such a gift, hinting strongly to the 10th prince that there would be grave trouble if the jade ruyi is accepted. The 4th prince explains to the 10th prince that the Crown Prince is making a joke. Certainly, the Crown Prince must have brought the ruyi to just show his brothers. He points out that one ruyi had been send to the imperial empress dowager, and one to a Royal Concubine. If the 10th prince accepts the ruyi, it will show disrespect to the elders.

Relived the 8th prince closes his eyes and the Crown Prince heaves a deep breath, realizing the mistake he almost had made. He concurs with the 4th prince, saying that it is a joke. The Crown Prince then promises to send over the real gift in a few days. The 13th prince reminds the Crown Prince that he has a new herd of horses and had mentioned gifting one of those to the 10th prince. The 8th prince changes the subject, and invites the Crown Prince to select an opera performance. The Crown Prince points out that since it is the 10th prince’s birthday, he should be the one making the selection. The 10th replies that he had already chosen one. The Crown Prince declares that that is what he wants to listen to as well. The 13th prince suggests that the 10th prince offers the Crown Prince wine. So the 10th prince says that since the Crown Prince arrived late, he should have 3 cups as a punishment.

As he is unable to hold his alcholol well, the 10th prince soon excuses himself, saying that he needs to take a break. Rouxi perks up when he makes his exit and hurriedly, beckoning Qiaohui to ask if the arrangements have been completed. Once confirmed, Rouxi goes after him. She finds him bent over throwing up. Patting his back she hands him her handkerchief, and the 10th prince looks around asking. “Did anyone see?” Ruoxi frowns and chides the prince about being worried about his status when he is in such a state. He wonders if Ruoxi is there to watch him be embarrassed for being such a poor drinker. But she declares that she wants to treat him a little better for his birthday, having prepared a present for him. Delighted, the 10th prince readily closes his eyes when she instructs him to, following her as she leads him to a specially prepared pavilion. Calling him ‘Little Red Hood’, she holds his sleeve and asks him to follow granny.

He nervously demands that she serve him for the rest of his life if there are any accidents. They walk slowly, with the 10th prince closing his eyes and Ruoxi laughing beside him. Qiaohui sees Ruoxi and gives a nod before scurrying off. “Open your eyes now!”, announces Rouxi. When the prince opens his eyes, he is greeted by string after string of multicolored paper cranes dancing between rows of colorful paper lanterns, merrily swaying in the wind. The 10th prince exclaims delightedly and hurries forward, twirling the paper cranes and asks what they are. Ruoxi replies 1000 cranes. All personally folded by Ruoxi herself! He dashes back and forth, bouncing the cranes when he hears Ruoxi singing behind him. She sings him the modern version of "Happy Birthday", and he is delighted and amazed, not having heard the songs before.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 2 Part III

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) > Episode 2 Part I > Episode 2 Part II > Episode 2 Part III

Ruoxi sits beside the pond. She is bored and tries to throw stones to see how far the small pebbles cab skip. With her head tilted to the side, she skips each stone with repeated refrains, “I am bored, I am bored, I -am- bored!” Soon her neck is stiff from her posture. As she is gingerly rubbing her sore neck, she spots a rabbit nearby. She sneaks up to the rabbit in glee, cooing and it and offering it food in order or her to grab it. But before she has the opportunity to catch it, the rabbit runs off. In hot pursuit, Ruoxi repeats her cries to the rabbit “Don’t run!”

At this moment the 8th, 10th and 14th princes are walking across the garden. The 8th prince asks the 1th prince why he wanted Ruo Lan instead of Ming Hui to arrange his birthday. The10th prince tells his older brother not to make wild guesses. Although he enjoyed the past parties that Ming Hui had made for him., he feels that Rouxi would have more tricks up her sleeve and might come up with a fresh idea on how to celebrate his birthday.

Just as the princes are talking about Rouxi, her cries telling the rabbit not to run are heard from a distance before the actual person appears before them but too preoccupied looking for the rabbit to greet them. The10th prince calls her name in delight and darts towards her while the others follow. The 8th prince comments with a smile that Ruoxi is indeed different and impish, while the 14th prince remarks that it would be much better to meet her instead of just hearing about Ruoxi (he has never met her yet), noting that she does seem quite lively.

The 10th prince is behind Ruo Xi when she twirls in mid-step, grinning at the 8th prince, she declares that she is trying to catch a rabbit. When the 10th prince asks to see it, Rouxi looks for the rabbit and claims that it has been frightened away by the 10th prince. Disgruntled, he 10th prince is unhappy for getting blames, but the 14th prince comments that it would not be hard to find the rabbit, as the garden is garden.

Having not met the 14th prince before, Ruoxi looks curiously and the 8th prince introduces the 14th prince. She greets the prince before promptly running off with the 10th price to search for the rabbit together. Smiling, the other two princes follow suit and help capture the rabbit.

The rabbit is soon caught and Rouxi apologizes to the rabbit, which has been placed in a cage, promising to take good care of it since it has lost its freedom. While looking a the rabbit in its cage, she pensively remarks that they are alike: being trapped in their respective “cages”. A new female voice soon disturbs Ruoxi out of her reverie, saying that the fall must have damaged her. Rouxi looks up and examines the new face, a young woman dressed in fine white and blue silks. Ruoxi asks who she is and the young woman frowns, saying that Ruoxi must have really damaged her brain to not know who she is.

A memory comes to Rouxi as the scene of her falling down the stairs replays in her head, recognizing the vague female form who had laughed at the top of the stairs. Qiaohui’s voice accompanies the memory and Ruoxi concludes that the lady is Mingyu, Minghui’s younger sister. Rouxi keeps quiet and Mingyu angrily accuses Ruoxi of not taking her seriously, and Rouxi agrees. This further incenses Mingyu and she loses her temper exclaiming, “Even your sister needs to speak politely to me, who are you to speak to me like this?” With her sisten being mention, Ruoxi decides to be cautious and not cause more trouble for her sister. She replies, “Oh I remember now, you must be Gorolo Mingyu.”

Rouxi tries to excuse herself, but Mingyu is intent on causing trouble for her. Mingyu stands forward and demands that Rouxi give her the rabbits because she wants them. But Ruoxi says there are some exceptions but Mingyu continues to demand for the rabbit. Rouxi replies that she has already given Mingyu, peased at the apparent surrender, Mingyu grabs the cage but Ruo Xi pushes her hand away clarifying, “I’ve already given you ‘face’.”

Soon both girls struggle for the cage, Minghui appears and commands them to stop, asking Mingyu to release her grip. Minghui slyly references the rabbit while looking at Rou Xi, “Saying it (implying Rouxi) is just an animal, why are you fighting and lose your own dignity.” Minghui catches on and drops her hand, agreeing with the hidden sentiment and hisses ‘animal’ at Rouxi. Rouxi plans her revenge as the two walk away….

Which turns out to be borrowing the 10th prince's dog, and wanting to set the dog on a bad person. The 10th prince innocently asks who this bad person is and if there was anyone who had bullied Rouxi. However, Rouxi refuses to give further explanation and insists he loan her the dog. The 10th prince tells Ruoxi that the Gorolo sisters (Minhui and Mingyu) are known to be argumentative and unreasonable, stating that he is also somewhat afraid of the and that Ming Yu does not even respect him.

Ming Yu is spotted playing with her maid in the garden by Rouxi. So she ‘innocently’ calls the 10th prince over with his dog, asking to play where the two women are. Upon seeing Mingyu, the 10th prince suggests going elsewhere. But Rouxi insists that since it is the 8th prince’s household, they can play wherever they want. Although the 10th prince clearly wants to avoid any kind of confrontation with Mingyu, he complies to Rouxi’s wishes with a sigh.

So just when Mingyu is catching butterflies’ with a net, totally unaware of the two, Rouuxi asks what the dog likes to play and the 10th princes replies that it likes to play fetch. Before he realizes it, Rouxi suddenly throws the ball for the dog to fetch in Mingyu’s direction. Alarmed, the 10th prince sprints after his dog. But it is too late, the balls lands in Mingyu’s net and the dog leaps excitedly to retrieve it. Mingyu screams out of fear, and Rouxi also screams along feigning her horror as the dog lunges at Mingyu and causes her to fall flat on her face. She gets up, lips swollen and pouty. Rou Xi starts to giggle. Mingyu demands to know who is the dog’s owner to which the 10th prince claims ownership.

At this juncture, Rouxi dashes forward, swinging a finger at the dog, calling it a beast all the while looking in Minyu’s direction reprimanding, “How dare you attack someone like that. Aren’t you just la dog who threatens others because you have powerful owner (Minghui)?” Rouxi claims the responsibility and asks Mingyu not to blame the 10th prince. This causes Mingyu to step forward wanting to hit Rouxi, but the 10th mediates in the between them, ending up get hit by the two girls instead.

Upset that his face is brusied, the 10th prince makes a fuss and whines. Rouxi persuades the prince to allow her to massage the bruises out with an egg, assuring him that they will disappear in time for his birthday celebration. Afraid that her sister would find out, Rouxi asks the 10th prince not tell anyone about the incident. Peeved, he says that he is not a hero but a coward. But she manages to calm him down as she rubs his face with the egg, persuading him to command the servants not to speak of the matter.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 2 Part II

After leaving Rouxi to ponder his words, the 4th princes proceeds to the study room where his brothers appear to be arguing. Puzzled, the 4th prince asks what the matter is. The 13th prince takes the opportunity and tells the others, “Good, since 4th brother is here, let’s hear his thoughts on the matter.” The other princes greet the 4th prince as they explain what caused the argument, which is about the 10th prince birthday celebration. The 8th prince explains that the10th prince wants to celebrate in his mansion, but the Crown Prince is also planning on hosting a celebration for the 10th prince, putting them in a dilemma as they do not want to offend the Crown Prince.

Upon hearing the reason, the 4th prince smile and says that since it is the 10th prince’s birthday, the Crown Prince had already given earlier instructions that the celebrations should be as what the 10th prince wants as it is his birthday. And since 10th wants the celebration at 8th’s place, then it should be so.

Happy that he is able to have his birthday celebration in the 8th prince’s mansion, the 10th prince requests that his celebration be held in Roulan’s abode and that Rouxi arrange his birthday celebrations. His requests stuns his brothers and they tease him as they know that he has feelings for Rouxi.

Meanwhile, Ruo Xi is siiting at the staircase where her accident occurred (and caused her to “lose” her memory). She sites there thinking about the 4th princes words. After sorting her thoughts, she leaps up, repeating his words once more and then says, “Bingo!”, raising her finger as she laughs softly in delight.

She saunters off and soon spots the maids playing with a shuttlecock. The young women laugh as they transfer the shuttlecock to one another. When it misses its target, Ruoxi catches the shuttlecock happily; pleased to find something she can play well. Qiaohui asks if Ruoxi knows the game, to which she replies, “A little.” She soon performs advanced kicks with the toy while the maids look on in awe. She twirls and spins, sending the shuttlecock up and out before sitting against the edge of a stone table continuing to kick the shuttlecock. One last flick sends the shuttlecock flying towards the 8th prince who has been silently observing Ruoxi’s performance with pleasure. The maids are alarmed and quickly curtsy to the 8th prince before retreating, leaving Rouxi with the 8th prince.

The 8th prince returns the shuttlecock, while Rouxi sulks that he was watching silently without warning any of his presence. He retorts, that she did not wake him when she saw him dozing in the horse carriage. He then invites her along to a discussion with Minghui (the first wide) and Roulan about the birthday celebrations for the 10th prince. Rouxi follows, tossing the shuttlecock over her shoulder.

When the subject is brought up, Ruolan tries to decline the request to organize 10th prince’s party, stating her inexperience might mar her husband’s reputation. But the 8th prince replies that it is the 10th prince’s wish. Minghui states that since it is their husband’s specific request, Ruolan should accept the task. Roulan finally agrees. The 8th prince reassures Ruolan that it will be a simple affair for the family, where everyone could relax and enjoy themselves.

Unhappy, Minghui offers her help, stressing that it should not affect the 8th prince’s dignity. Ruolan nods. The 8th prince says that he would be staying at Roulan’s when Minhui asks when he will visit her. In the kitchen, Qiaohui bosses the kitchen staff, asking for fresh fish, and telling them to be vigilant in the food preparation. Ruolan is standing at the door telling Qiaohui not to be too flustered by a simple family meal. But Qiaohui disagrees, saying that since the 8th prince seldom stays over, they must not make any mistakes in serving the prince. She has prepared the ingredients for dumplings since the 8th prince enjoys the dumplings that Ruolan personally wraps.

Rouxi asks why Qiaohui is more concerned about the dishes than her own sister and Qiaohui replies that she does not want Ruolan to suffer under the servants. As the 8th prince seldom stays over, the servants believe that Ruolan is not favoured by the 8th prince. Although Roulan is aware of the servants talk, she does not take it to heart. Qiao Hui adds that it is difficult to survive in the 8tj prince’s household if the Ce Fujin does not have any rank or status, she is anxious to ensure that Ruolan receives the respect she deserves. The10th prince’s birthday celebration would be the ideal opportunity to show off Ruolan’s ability.

Rouxi offers to help with the dumplings, declaring, “We have to to make a successful party for the 10th prince.” Ruolan smiles at her sister’s declaration, “Don’t worry, you are such good friends with him, I am sure he will appreciate the effort. I am well aware of your feelings for the 10th prince.” Ruoxi denies this and Ruo Lan replies that the 10th prince actually wants Ruoxi and not her to celebration arrangements.

Ruo Xi affirms that she is aware of the purpose and says that they are such happy playmates, and she enjoys their time together. Ruolan quietly stuffs a dumpling while listening to her sister assure her that she is taking too much into her relationship with the 10th prince.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 2 Part I

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心)  > Episode 2 Part I
After spending the day riding Ling Long, Rouxi tells Roulan about her adventures and how good the horse was and had fine qualities. Roulan looks at Rouxi in surprise, was cause Rouxi to pause and ask her sister if she knows how to ride. Roulan asks her is she cannot remember again, and Rouxi affirms that she cannot remember. Rouxi is relieved to learn that she did not know how to ride horses prior to today’s experience, and that in the past no matter how hard her father forced her to ride, she absolutely refused to learn.

Relieved, Rouxi declares that she had discovered that she actually likes horse riding and asks her sister to join her the next time, she winces as she sits. At her asking, Roulan turns away and tries to avoid the question and tells Rouxi to take a bath. Not catching on, Rouxi continues blabbering about how careful and considerate the 8th prince was, ensuring that she was safe and having fun. Despite all Rouxi has said praising the 8th prince, Roulan shows no interest in what Rouxi has to say about the 8th prince.

When Roulan still shows no interest in what Rouxi is saying, Rouxi tells her sister that since they are married Roulan should try to be good to the 8th prince as he is good husband material and worth fighting for. Roulan ends up pricking her finger (she was sewing something) and states that she wants to go to the prayer hall and do some chanting. Seeing her sister’s reaction, Rouxi bites her lips and asks Qiaohui if she had said anything inappropriate. She is relieved to learn that she had not. But than Qiaohui adds, “Second Mistress, actually when two persons become husband and wife, there might be duty but fate is hard to force. To be able to live amicably is quite acceptable.” From what Qiaohui had said, Rouxi deduces that her sister does not really like the 8th prince, but Qiaohui denies having said anything to imply that conclusion.

Soon after, Rouxi is out with Qiaohui looking for the 10th prince. Rouxi enjoys the company of the 10th prince, and tells Qiaohui not to reveal the fact that she enjoys his company. Qiaohui agrees that the 10th prince is quite an amusing person and that he would peeved if Rouxi does not tease him. Although he frequently loses when they are having a verbal argument, but ends up laughing happily when he loses to her. Rouxi agrees that the 10th prince is a simple and candid person. Although he is poor in the arts (literary) and has an impulsive temper, he would make a good friend as he is a simple man. Both girls laugh.

While out looking for the 10th prince, Rouxi says they would be fine as long as they do not encounter the 4th princs, she nicknames him “Ice Face”. Unfortunately for Rouxi, her worse fears are confirmed when they do meet the 4th prince. She tries to make her escape before he notices her, but it is too late.

The 4th prince calls out, “Maertai Rou Xi!” Upon hearing hear name being called, Rou Xi winces and makes a face before slowly turning around to greet the prince. He asks her if she is avoiding him, to which she denies. However the 4th prince points out that seeing her flee upon seeing him could be interpreted as such. Rouxi nervously replies that was so engrossed in a task that she was supposed to do, that she did not notice him, all the while giving herself away with her eyes darting all over the place. The 4th prince is not convinced and tells her that he thinks she has a guilty conscience about her death-seeking attempt recently. He is determined to find out her reasons for doing so, even if she refuses to tell him. The 4th prince repeats her words, “Seeking life thorough seeking death. If you don’t want to answer, then fine.”

He turns and starts to walk away but Ruo Xi responds with a “Eh.” The 4th prince waits for a while before slowing walking back towards her, as Rouxi finds her voice. She tries to explain her situation metaphorically, “If I feel like I am in a dream but it is a dream that I cannot wake up from, what can I do?” The 4th confidently replies her with only 6 words, “Since you’re there, make the best of it. Do you understand?”

While she thinks about what he has said, he continues, “Be flexible, even the hardiest wood would shatter under too much pressure.” Seeing that Rouxi is not responding, the 4th prince snorts, “Never mind. I am preaching to deaf ears!” With that he walks away, leaving Ruo Xi to mull over his words.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 1 Final Part

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心)  > Episode 1 Part I > Episode 1 Part II  > Episode 1 Part III > Episode 1 Final Part

The next scene shows Ruoxi leaning against a pillar in the garden, reading a book about Song poems aloud. She soon sets the book aside with a sigh and thinks to herself that if were the modern times she would be considered a knowledgeable person, but here in the past it seems like she is half literate. She thinks to herself that it is fortunate that she is in her current body of Rouxi who is of privilege status, else she would have starved if she were elsewhere in the Qing dynasty.

She attempts to read the books again, but soon turns her attention to some ants that are crawling on a wall nearby. She ends up playing with the ants with a stick while the 10th prince sneaks up from behind her, wondering what she is doing. When he realizes that she was only playing with ants, he laughs aloud, signaling his presence to her/ The 10th prince teases her that she is a playful girl amusing herself with ants when he thought that she was seriously studying. He laughs again saying that he thought too highly of her.

Rouxi is fuming at his teasing. The 8th prince is also present; he asks her if she was studying, pointing to the book. She nods, but the 10th prince belittles her, picking up her book and waves it in the air insisting that she was not studying but playing with ants. Ruoxi narrows her eyes and replies, "Haven’t you heard there is a world in a flower, a bodhi within a leaf? Those look like ants, but they aren't really ants." The 10th blinks at her statement, while the 8th prince laughs saying that the 10th prince should study a little more.

Satisfied that she has the 10th prince dumbfounded, Ruoxi grins to herself as he is unable to retort and replies that she learned a little philosophy from Roulan. The 8th prince agrees that she does read and chant a lot.

The 10th prince changes the subject and asks Rouxi if she can recognize all the words in the book. To which she replies, “I know the words, but they do not know me. We are getting to know each other better.” The 8th prince asks her how does she do it, and she replies that she does so through guessing, earning another laugh from the 10th prince. He says that if that were possible there would be no need for teachers. The 8th prince, on the other hands, smiles to himself and moves on. The 10th prince follows, but turns around to ask Rouxi if she would like to go horse riding with them.

Wanting to get out of the house and doing something different, she readily agrees. On the way to the riding grounds, in the horse carriage, Rouxi looks out the window making small noises and muttering to herself. Her actions make the 10th prince curious and her asks her what is so interesting. But she refuses to tell him, until he promises to owe her a favor.

10th turns back, asking if she would like to go riding with them. She happily agrees, making a modern gesture of victory behind their backs. '

In the horse carriage, Rou Xi looks out of the window. She makes a small 'eh' sound before shaking her head, pulling the curtain back into place. 10th is curious and looks out of the window. He asks what she saw and Ruo Xi refuses to tell him.

He asks again, this time she demands he gives her something in return for her answer. The prince hesitates and Ruoxi assures him that it would not be anything he could not complete. He finally agrees. Ruoxi grins, stressing that the 10th prince has to remember because she has a witness, looking to the 8th prince. The 8th prince opens his eyes with a smile, and replies, "I will remember. You may tell him."

She grins again and tells him that she was initially puzzled as to why the carriage was able to move smoothly on a road that was so crowded, with people moving away from the carriage to give way to it. But the carriage did not have the banner or sign stating that it is the 8th prince carriage, so how did they know and make for the carriage. Her conclusion was that those who live within the city would be aware that only high-ranking officials would ride such a carriage. So even though they do not know who is in the carriage, making way would make everyone's life easy.

They finally reach the riding grounds, the 10th prince criticizes each of the horses that are presented insisting that there is a problem with them. So the 8th prince offers his precious and most gentle horse, Ling Long, for Rouxi to ride. The 10th prince is surprised that the 8th prince readily offered his precious horse, which is unlike him.

While waiting for Ling Long, Rouxi sees the 8th prince mounting his horse for a ride, and thinks to herself in admiration that he is handsome. Ling Long is soon saddled and Rouxi mounts it with much persuasion from the 10th prince as she is nervous, and admits that she does not know how to ride. The 10th prince laughs at her but offers to hold the reins for her while she is on the horse. The 8th prince rides off while Rouxo watches him, while the 10th prince leads her on Ling Long to a small clearing.

When she is back home, Rouxi excitedly tells her sister about her interesting day, praising Ling Long’s fine qualities and that its name suits it. Roulan looks on in surprise and Rouxi asks if she knows how to ride. Roulan asks her if she does not remember again and Rouxi nods slowly, with slight tension in her expression.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 1 Part III

The princes alight from their horse. Having not met the 13th prince before, he introduces himself and Ruoxi repeats after him, "13th prince." She laughs uneasily and greets him before he offers a hand to help her stand up. The fall results in her spraining her leg, and she stumbles as she attempts to stand up with the 13th prince’s help. The 4th prince is standing at the side observing. He soon disappears into a medical hall and emerges with a bottle of medicine for sprains. He returns to them,, keeping the medicine in his sleeve.

Puzzled, the 13th prince asks if they already know each other. Rouxi replies that she is from the 8th prince’s household and she is his sister-in-law. The 13th prince is astonished and comments that people who live in the 8th prince’s household are refined in their actions like the prince, unlike her to be roaming the streets and randomly throwing herself onto oncoming horses. She snaps back that she was bored so she went for a walk.

Having mounted his horse, the 4th prince retrieves the 13th prince’s horse and heads bak towards them. They tell her that they will be escorting her back to the residence. She thanks them and asks them for a favor, that they would not mention the incident to anyone back at the 8th prince’s residence stating that she would be in trouble if the matter were to be made known. The 13th prince looks to the 4th prince for affirmation of the request and is surprised when the 4th prince actually gives a small nod agreeing to Rouxi’s request. So the 13th prince agrees verbally on behalf of the both of them.

Upon hearing that they have agreed, Rouxi grins and lightly pats the 13th prince’s shoulder declaring him a righteous man. Both men look at her amused; the way Rouxi is behaving is unusual for a lady of her status and social standing, with her bright laughter and bold character.

When they return to the residence, Roulan and Qiao Hui rushes over and greets the two princes. Roulan is concerned about Rouxi’s limp, which the latter lightly dismisses as a small accident where tripped when both the 4th and 13th prince entered looking for the 8th prince. The 13th prince smiles in amusement at Rouxi witty reply to save herself, while the 4th prince looks on thoughtfully, observing Rouxi. The 4th prince supports the ‘excuse’ that Rouxi has provided and requests to meet the 8th prince.

Roulan offers to lead the two princes to the main hall while Qiao Hui goes to inform the 8th prince. Before leaving, the 4th prince requests to speak to Rouxi. Roulan hestitates but has no choice but to leave them, leading the 13th prince to the main hall first. With no one around, the 4th prince confronts Rouxi that she knew what she was doing and deliberately stepped into the path of their oncoming horses. He asks her if she wanted to end her life. Rouxi hatily denies the accusation, claiming that it was an accident and that the 4th prince has misunderstood her. However, the 4th prince states that the first time might have been an accident, but the second time was definitely not an accident. He tells her that is she attempts to do the same for a third time, he will not stop his horse anymore.

Rouxi declares that she did what she did not to die but to live, as there is too much that is to live for, death is not something that she seeks. Her strange comments interests the 4th prince and he ends up staring at her. Soon after he pulls out the medicine that he had purchased earlier and hands it to her saying that it is for her sprain. She quickly accepts it and thanks him. He tells her that since he is the one that saved her live, so her life belongs to him so she better not even consider suicide. With that he turns and leave, leaving a bewildered Rouxi holding the bottle of medicine as he disappears to the main hall.

Her leg not yet healed, Rouxi hobbles to visit her sister. Roulan us grateful to the 4th and 13th princes and proposes a visit to show their appreciation, but Rouxi quickly rejects the ideas claiming that she had already thanked them. Roulan tell her that this is the basic act of courtesy. To which Rouxi retorts, “It's a small matter, both princes would probably not take it to heart. But if this matter comes to Ming Hui's attention, a small matter might become a large incident.” Ruo Lan scolds her younger sister for misusing her intelligence.

Ruoxi grins cheekily before noticing the letter on the table. Ruolan says that the eunuch readerhas not been by yet, so Rouxi offers to read the letter. Ruolan is surprised. Ruoxi declares that it is an easy matter, confidently spreading out the page of the letter from their father and elder brother. Ruoxi initially smiles and then squints while skimming down the page. Much of the script is in the traditional form, quite different from the modern simplified form that is being used in China now.

To add to the challenge, the cursive style of the writing makes it even more indecipherable. Ruolan glances over a Ruoxi clears her throat, stuttering and stammering her way through the letter, skipping words and adding her own little mutters as she struggles to read to the amusement of Roulan. Roulan teases her "What? Is there even a spirit horse in the letter?"as she covers her laughter, gently remarking that she is surprised to hear that Ruoxi was going to read, thinking that she might have improved in her reading since she left home. But it is just as it was.

Sheepishly, Rouxi refolds the letter and places it back in its envelope, answering that it might be better for the eunuch reader to read the letter instead. Ruolan asks if Ruoxi is giving up, but Rouxi deflects, stating that perhaps it would be better if she starts from the beginning. Ruoxi beats a hasty retreat while the Ruolan shakes her head smiling.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 1 Part II

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心)  > Episode 1 Part I > Episode 1 Part II

Back in her room, Zhang Xiao struggles with herself as she finds herself caring for Ruolan but at the time same time, she feels that she is cheating of her affections as she is not Rouxi. She contemplates on how to tell Roulan the truth and thinks back to the day’s event where she was almost run over by the horse. She believes that if the horse had really run over her, she would have returned back to the present time as she felt her spirit leaving the body. Tossing and turning she finally drifts off to sleep.

In the morning, positive that she does not want to remain in the Qing dynasty any longer, she weighs her options and decides that if she were to have another ‘accident’ of equal magnitude of the car accident at the same location it occurred, she would be able to get back to the present time. When she steps out of her room, she is surprised by the bustle and hustle outside her Roulan’s courtyard. Zhang Xiao finds out that the 8th prince is finally coming over to have dinner at the residence.

Qiao Hui is ordered by Roulan to dress Rouxi (Zhang Xiao will now be called Rouxi from this point on) properly since this would be her first meeting with the 8th prince. Rouxi ends up being wrapped in 7 layers of cloth and is unaware that she is being so heavily clothed. While being wrapped, she is deep in thought about the struggle between the 4th and 8th prince for the throne. She is excited to meet the 8th prince, although he had lost the throne to the 4th prince, his intelligence and wits were renowned.

By the time she is finished thinking, she feels the burden of such thick clothes and complains stating that she would change her clothes is the 8th prince does not show up. Not able to withstand the heat, she excuses herself and hurries out into the cooler outdoors, hoping to cool off. While she is frantically fanning herself, she wonders if the makeup she is wearing is waterproof all the while sighing and moaning, dabbing her face with her sleeve.

When she is engrossed in dabbing her face, a handkerchief appears and a gentle voice asks her to stop her tears. Surprised Rouxi turns around a face smiling at her. It is the 8th prince and he amusedly declares that she must be Rouxi. Realizing who she is, Rouxi remembers to greet him with a curtsey while being flustered at the same time. The 8th prince comments that he thought that she was crying, to which she explains that she was just perspiring from the thick layer of clothes; she accepts the handkerchief and they head back for dinner.

Meanwhile, the 9th and 10th prince have arrived and are already waiting for the 8th prince to have dinner together. Dinner soon starts and their conversation is friendly, with laughter ringing loud. As Rouxi watches the 8th prince dishing food for her sister and asking after her, even instructing Qiao Hui to brew more tonics for Roulan, Rouxi thinks to herself that the 8th prince is caring and considerate to her sister. His kindness and gentleness deviates from his image portrayed in history, as a person who was well known for his devious plots and strategies which makes Rouxi think.

While deep in her thought, she soon realizes that the 10th prince is looking at her intently. She glances back and suddenly makes a snapping motion with her mouth, with startles the 10th prince and results in him dropping his food. Everyone turns to look at him while Rouxi quickly picks up her bowl to eat, which results in her choking on the rice. Gloating over her plight, the 10th prince is admonished by the 8th prince who tells him to apologize. The 10th prince apologizes and says how pretty Rouxi is even when she is choking unlike him. Upon that comment, the 9th prince teases the 10th prince saying that his speech has improved.

After dinner has ended and back in her own room, Rouxi probes Qiao Hui on the relationship between her sister and the 8th prince. She learns that the 8th prince rarely visits Roulan, and his visits are short, asking only polite questions. The other wives who came after Roulan already have children but Roulan does not seem to be bothered, rather focusing on praying and reciting Buddhist scripture. And it is because of Roulan’s nonchalance and lack of interaction that alienates her from the rest of the household. Thinking of the fate of the 8th prince, Rouxi thinks to herself that her sister keeping her distance and not being attached to the 8th prince might be the best solution after all.

The next day, Rouxi sneaks out again, determined to carry out her plan to return to the future. Because no matter how she looks at it the result is that she dies, so why not try? She walks through the busy street looking for horses and soon enough she hears the hooves of horses in a distance. She quickly places herself in the path of the oncoming horse, but just as the horse is about the touch her it is stopped with its nose to her face. She looks up in frustration and asks them why did they stop. It is the 4th and 13th prince.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) Episode 1 Part I

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心) > Episode 1 Part I
The drama begins with people scurrying in and out of a room in ancient China. We soon come to realize that this is in the Qing dynasty. The person in question is modern-day Zhang Xiao, who wakes up in the body of a young Manchurian girl. She wakes up to a younger version of herself, and with perfect eyesight (she was wearing glasses) and very long hair. She is initially disorientated and thinks that this is some sort of prank.

Just at this juncture, a maid enters the room and addresses her as “Second Young Mistress”. Confused Zhang Xiao demands to put an end to the charade (still thinking that it is a prank). Zhang Xiao questions Qiao Hui and learns that she is in the Qing dynasty and that the present Emperor is Kangxi. She is apparently the second daughter of a Manchurian general, Maertai Rouxi, and she is in the 8th prince’s household.

Upon hearing such information Zhang Xiao starts to panic and is flustered. Another woman enters the room and tries to calm Zhang Xiao down. She tells her that she is her elder sister Maertai Roulan and that Zhang Xiao has nothing to be afraid of. When asked what happened to her, Roulan tells her that she had fallen down a steep flight of stairs and had injured her head, rendering her unconscious for a few days. Even the physician was unsure of her recovery.

Zhang Xiao starts to have a flashback in the present time, where she was having an argument with her boyfriend, Huang Di (which can mean “Emperor”). She had accused him of cheating on her, and in the process of their argument had an accident (being electrocuted and hit by a car) that brought her to the Qing dynasty. It appears that the time of her accident, Maertai Rouxi also fell down the stairs at the exact moment in time. It finally sinks in that she is in the Qing dynasty and not in the modern world. She concludes that the accident had somehow brought her back to the Qing dynasty and thinks of ways on how she can go back to her own time.

Zhang Xiao finally recovers and spends the following days trying to strengthen her new body and discovering how she can leave the ancient period. She thinks to herself that it is fortunately that she is in the body Maertai Rouxi, where she is being looked after and taken care of by Qiao Hui and Roulan.

Zhang Xiao learns that her “sister”, Roulan, is the second wife of the 8th prince who spends all time chanting Buddhist scriptures and praying. So she assumes that her “sister” is not highly favored by her husband. Zhang Xiao, being stuck in Rouxi’s body is apprehensive about her future as she the 8th prince’s fate (through history). So she thinks to herself that it is maybe a good thing that Roulan is not that close to the 8th prince to minimize the pain. She decides that although the future for them may be unfortunate, since she is stuck in this time, she will live in the moment as is.

As she walks back to her room, she questions Qiao Hui about the Maertai family and herself, Rouxi. Her accident proves to be a good excuse for her to orientate herself with the current Qing dynasty she is in. Each time she acts out of character or asks a question, the people around her attribute it to her amnesia, which resulted from her head injury. She learns that Roulan and Rouxi’s mother had passed away just after Rouxi was born. Without a mother, Rouxi had grown out to be a willful child who was out of control, running wild like an untamed horse free-spirited. Not knowing what else to do with her, her father sent her to Roulan hoping that she will teach a young Rouxi some “manners and etiquette” that is worthy of a young lady.

Roulan comments that Rouxi (Zhang Xiao) has changed a little since her accident and is becoming more ladylike. Zhang Xiao contemplates telling Roulan that she is not her sister but someone else, as she feels that she is cheating her. She soon abandons the thought as no one would believe her and might even brand her as insane.

Gently probing Roulan, Zhang Xiao learns that she had been staying at the 8th prince’s household for 3 months and that she was sent to her because Roulan was the only one that Rouxi at least listened to. Their father wanted Roulan to teach Rouxi manners and etiquette that will help Rouxi in the compulsory Imperial Lady inspection (where daughters of esteemed Manchurian families are sent into the palace to be concubines or servants serving the Emperor) which would take place in 6 months time.

Computing the data that she has gathered, Zhang Xiao starts to contemplate her options. She realized that Roulan will not be a reliable heaven as the fate if the 8th prince is not a good one, but it would be even worse if she was to enter the Imperial Lady inspection and head for the palace! She decides that she needs to escape before the Imperial Lady inspection commences. She had an idea, to face a life-threatening accident/situation that will send her spirit back to the present time.

Pleased with her idea, she immediately ask Qiao Hui to bring her to the area where she fall from. Qiao Hui mentions how she was found at the foot of the stairs and that Ming Hui (the sister of the 8th prince’s first wife) was the one to witness the fall, claiming that Rouxi had tripped her way down the stairs.

Upon reaching at the scene of the accident, Zhang Xiao starts to climb the stairs remembering the sensation of falling down the stairs before fainting, seeing a blurred figure walking away. The flight of stairs is steep and if she were to fall again, her spirit will definitely return to the present time. As Zhang Xiao contemplates her actions (whether to fall down the stairs), Qiao Hui looks at her worriedly. Just as she musters her courage inches her way nearer the edge of the stairs from the top, Qiao Hui suddenly lunges forward ruining Zhang Xiao’s plan, as if anticipating her action and declares that they have been out for quite a while now and it is time to head back.

Just as they are about to head back, there is the sound of laughter and two males walk towards them. As Zhang Xiao is in a 13 year old Maertai Rouxi’ body, one of the men remarks that for a little girl her speech is interesting (she was commenting if parents look at the same blue sky despite being away from their children). The other man agrees wholeheartedly and looks at her with interest, saying that she speaks as though she is one who has a lot of experience in life. While all Zhang Xiao can do is stare at them, Qiao Hui hastily greets them as 9th and 10th prince (the brothers of the 8th prince) and tugs at Zhang Xiao to do the same.

Realizing that bowing is common in that era, Zhang Xiao bows and greets them albeit unconventionally as she does not know how to bow the correct way, which causes the 9th prince to raise a brow. The 10th prince asks Zhang Xiao if she is a Maertai and she nods. Realizing that they have matters to attend to the 9th and 10th prince take their prince. Even though Zhang Xiao has been in the 8th prince household for some time, the first princes that she meets are the historically recorded 'Poisonous Snake 9th' and the 'Wastrel/Blockhead 10th'. Zhang Xiao thinks to herself that they do not seem as history portrays them. Whilst thinking this to herself the 10th prince turns back to look at her and makes a funny face, making them both laugh.

It is not long after that Zhang Xiao slips out of the house secretly with Qiao Hui to wander the city streets. A worried Qiao Hui tries to persuade Zhang Xiao to go back, but to no avail. Qiao Hui comments that she must be recovering well as she is becoming more daring, and Zhang Xiao retorts that if she were to be cooped up for too long, ‘grass will grow on her’ (a modern Chinese slang), which had Qiao Hui confused. They soon come across a stall selling irons. Excited at seeing an iron in the Qing dynasty, Zhang Xiao intently examines the ancient equipment. Qiao Hui remarks that there was once a time when Roui was so willful and hard to manage that the maids would often want to use a large iron to tame her and make her more docile. Surprised, Zhang Xi asks if she (Rouxi) had been that difficult in the past, but Qiao Hui replies that she was only teasing.

As they pass 'Da Shi Lang', Zhang Xiao comments out loud that she had visited this place many times (in the present time) and is pleased that the air of old Beijing is still preserved. Qiao Hui is taken by surprised, and asks how Ruo Xi could have visit this place and know that much about Beijing since this is the first time she has stepped out of the mansion. Zhang Xiao laughs it off with uneasiness, saying that she had heard of it.

There is a huge commotion with soldiers starting to clear the road, pushing the pedestrians to the side. Qiao Hui urges Zhang Xiao away and gets into the line, saying the soldiers must be there to welcome the Emperor's return to the capital. Zhang Xiao looks on with excited curiosity. She stares in surprise as an eunuch who walks past looks exactly like a construction worker who interfered in the quarrel between her and her boyfriend Hung Di in the present time.

Lost in the moment, she calls out to the eunuch and pushes through the crowd to get to him. It does not help when the eunuch announces the arrival of the Emperor (‘huangdi’), thinking about her ex-boyfriend and losing her rationale she runs out and grabs the eunuch depending to know where is Huang Di. Just at this moment, a horse gallops from the opposite direction and almost tramples Zhang Xiao. As the horse nears to Zhang Xiao, a blue aura (her spirit) can be seen coming out of her body, but soon returns as the horse is restrained in time. The rider turns out to be the 4th prince, Yong Zhen (the future Emperor) and both he and Zhang Xiao stare at each other. Qiao Hui apologizes profusely and asks for forgiveness stating that they are from the 8th prince’s household. Hoping that they would not get into trouble.

After the incident, they return to the household and try to sneak in quietly by the back door. However, their absence was already discovered and the servants were being punished the moment they came back. Incensed, Zhang Xiao stoms off to the hall where the first wife of the 8th prince (whose title is Di Fujin), Ming Hui, is punishing them. Not understanding that this was the norm for that era, Zhang Xiao asks Roulan to stop the punishment as it is too heavy-handed, and how could she bear to mete out such punishment. Ming Hui takes to opportunity to bully the both of them stating that while one is anti-social the other is impulsive. She also comments that servants who break the rules ought to be punished accordingly, and mistresses who are foolish in their actions will only implicate their servants.

Ming Hui is determined to punish Rouxi for leaving the house without permission. Roulan kneels and asks to be punished in Rouxi’s stead instead, reasoning that since her sister is young and unaware of the household rules as an older sister she should be responsible for her sister’s actions. Agreeing fully, Ming Hui states that Roulan should be punished more servrely since she is responsible. Angry at the outcome, Zhang Xiao points out that Ming Hui’s position in the household is higher than Roulan, so by the same logic she should also be punished even more severely because Roulan was in the wrong. Furious, Ming Hui raises her hand to slap Zhang Xiao but Roulan stops her. Both of them struggle and fall to the ground. Zhang Xiao rushes forward to help Roulan but Ming Hui pulls her away, determined to slap her. There is soon a 3-way struggle and all three of them fall, landing Ming Hui on a chair and hitting her head. Incensed, Ming Hui storms off.

With Ming Hui gone, Zhang Xiao contritely helps Roulan up and asks if she is ok while Roulan gives her the cold shoulder before calming down. Roulan tells her not to worry about the punished servants since she had already given instructions for their treatment. Touched at the gesture, Zhang Xiao asks that she be scolded as Ming Hui will use this incident to make things difficult for them. Qiao Hui unwittingly reveals that since Roulan’s marriage into the household, Ming Hui has always been making life difficult for Roulan.

Touched, Zhang Xiao asks to be scolded, saying that Ming Hui would use this incident to make matters difficult for Ruo Lan. Qiao Hui added that ever since Ming Huiu married into the household, the first wife had been making Ruo Lan's life difficult. Upset at the news, Zhang Xiao wonders out loud loud why Roulan is still married to the 8th prince if life is so difficult for her, being confined to her small residence and having to share her husband with other women, she deserves better. She goes furher and says that a woman needs to have self-respect: if a woman is capable and willing, she could be self-sufficient and independent. This displays her very modern strong feminism views that seem out of place in such an era, forgetting where she is; highlighting the difference between Zhang Xiao's modern outlook and Ruo Lan's traditional upbringing.

Ruo Lan in turn, reprimands Zhang Xiao for her disrespect and asks if she has forgotten who she is and what is ranking and status. Remembering which era she is in, Zhang Xiao falls silent. Qiao Hui tells her that he words are a little out of place, and Zhang Xiao replies that maybe she is too forward in her thinking (another modern slang), which confuses those present. She soon realizes that in the 1700s women would not be able to understand her views on feminism.

Ruolan examines Zhang Xiao as though thinking about what she said, before saying she understands. She tells Zhang Xiao that the both if them grew up in the north-west where rules were less rigorously maintained. But now that they are in the capital, Ruolan emphasizes that rules and regulations have to be followed now that they are in a prince’s household.

A sullen Zhang Xiao states her reluctance to remain in the capital, which makes Ruolan smiles, saying that Ruoxi has not changed from her troublemaker-self. However, she is glad that Ruo Xi defended her. She tells Zhang Xiao that if she could show a little more restraint in the future, she will overlook whatever her younger sister does within the confines of their circle. Feeling that she is deciving such a nice ‘sister’, Zhang Xiao pauses and softly tells Roulan that the sister in front of her is not the same Ruo Xi that she used to know. Ruolan replies that she knows, Ruoxi has become more caring and understanding. Gently touching Zhang Xiao's cheek, Ruolan smiles and says, "You’ve grown up."

步步惊心MV: A Season of Waiting for You by Liu Shi Shi

Lyrics to “A Season of Waiting”
Waiting for Summer, waiting for Autumn
Waiting for the next season
I have to wait until the moon is full again
Before you will return to my side
Shall we meet again?
Can’t help it but missing you
Suddenly want to see your face
That familiar face
Holding hands is unnecessary
As we walk slowly through the snow and drift
Unable to see each other
And we still pine inside for each other
I only want you to know
I am doing just fine
A love for a lifetime, a passion for an eternity
I will wait for you until I grow old
I only want you to know
I can’t let it go and I can’t forget it
Your smile and your care
Is my warm support
