 Xiaoyi waits for SuSu at their arranged spot, but Xiapwei turns up instead. She threatens Xiaoyi with SuSu unless he kills her again, and he has no choice but to comply. For SuSu's sake he captures a man and throws him into Xiaowei's room. Just as he is about to leave, the dead man's body is thrown out and is seen by guards on patrol. The guards seeing Xiaoyi and the dead man's body start to attack, and Xiaoyi kills some guards. He is about to make his escape when Xiaowei sucks his energy, weakening him an reverting him to his demon form.

SuSu is waiting for Xiaoyi when she learns that the heart killer had killed 13 guards the night before. She agrees to help Wang Sheng nab Xiaoyi. She sends him a message to meet her at the lake. Xia Bing suggests using a demon trap to capture Xiaoyi, but Pang Yong objects; annoying her in the process. Afraid that Gao Xiang will be rash (as Xiaoyi had killed his wife, Lin Lin), Wang Sheng sends him away. Xiaowei uses SuSu's case to sow discord between Wang Sheng and Peirong.

Xiaoyi turns up at the lake and tells SuSu that he was forced to kill again. Xiaowei makes him notice Wang Sheng's men laying in ambush. Feeling betrayed by SuSu, Xiaoyi knocks SuSu unconscious. Pang Yong and Xia Bing try to subdue Xiaoyi, but his demon powers are heightened due to the 'betrayal'. SuSu regains consciousness and begs Wang Sheng not to kill Xiaoyi.

When SuSu falls into the lake, Xiaoyi jumps into the lake and attempts to save her, despite of his
aversion to water. He is moved when a dying SuSu tells him that she does not mind that he is a demon, she likes him all the same.

Devastated by SuSu's death, Peirong blames Wang Sheng, and Xiaowei realizes that she has yet to meet a man who does not mind that she is a demon. After cooling down, Peirong apologizes to Wang Sheng. When Xiaowei kneels down on her knees to beg Peirong to let her become Wang Sheng's concubine, Wang Sheng asserts that there will only be one Mrs Wang. Peirong is moved.

Wang Sheng looks for Xiaowei and learns that she has left. He is unaware that she is testing him. When Xiaoyi attacks Wang Sheng, Xiaowei comes to his rescue. She tells him that she does not mind any status as long as she gets to be with him. He stops her from undressing and leaves the room. However, Peirong misreads the situation and finally gives in to Xiaowei's request.

Not long after a heart is found in Wang Sheng's house, and Pang Yong starts to suspect Xiaowei. To make Xiaowei spare Wang Sheng and the rest of Taiyuan, Peirong agrees to take poison to turn herself into a demon, as per Xiaowei's request. Pang Yong stops Xia Bing from confronting Xiaowei at SuSu's funeral. Everyone is shocked when Peirong recovers miraculously after being bitten by a crow.

Having seen Xiaowei's true demon (fox) form, Xiahou Xiang is enchanted by a spell and starts to attack Pang Yong. Before he breathes his last, he tells Pang Yong that Xiaowei is a demon and he hopes that Pang Yong will take good care of Xia Bing. Both Pang Yong and Xia Bing vow to avenge Xiahou Xiang's death. Upon hearing that Pang Yong has killed Xiahou Xiang, Wang Sheng runs out just as Xiaowei is serving him soup.

After consuming the poison, Peirong finds her hair and skin turning white. Xiaowei forces her to leave as she threatens Peirong by tearing out Gao Xiang's heart. Wang Sheng is misinformed that Peirong had killed Gao Xiang, he refuses to believe she is a demon despite her insistence that she is one. Pang Yong takes her away before the people of Taiyuan kill her, while Xia Bing pretends to be Peirong and lures the people away.

Xia Bing finally confronts Xiaowei (Xu Xu), who admits to accidentally killing Xia Bing's grandfather, but still regards Xia Bing as her little sister. Xiaowei runs away when Xia Bing discovers that her blood can subdue demons. Xia Bing and Pang Yong hope to kill Xiaowei, so as to destroy the spell cast on Peirong by Xiaowei (Xu Xu).

Even when Peirong admits to all the kills, Wang Sheng refuses to believe her and insists that he will always love her. She kills herself as she knows that he is unable to. At this juncture, Pang Yong attacks Xiaowei, but he fails to do so. However, it is now revealed that she is the demon that they have been looking for. Xiaoyi comes to Xiaowei's rescue.

Wang Sheng begs Xiaowei to spare Peirong and kills himself when she tells him that she will only do so when he dies. Xia Bing uses her blood to deal with Xiaoyi. Xiaoyi possesses Pang Yong and attacks Xia Bing viciously. He tells her to kill him quickly, but she is unable to do so. He ends up stabbing himself, and tells her to take care of herself and find a way to revive Peirong.

Just as Xiaoyi is about to kill Xia Bing, he is stopped by Xu Xu. Realizing that she had the love she was craving for all this time (with Xia Bing), and  that she was mistaken, Xu Xu sacrifices herself to revive all the people who died. Xu Xu mends her relationship with Xia Bing and reveals to Xiaoyi that she had lied to him about SuSu. Xiaoyi commits suicide by diving into the lake to be with SuSu.

Peirong and Wang Sheng are reunited. Xu Xu insists that Xia Bing be the one to subdue her and parts with her sadly, having realized her mistake. Unwilling to do so, Xia Bing is forced by Xu Xu to subdue her with the demon rod. Xu Xu tells her that now, no one will doubt Xia Bing's capabilities as a demon slayer as she subdued her. The series ends with Xia Bing and Pang Yong deciding to become wanderers together. They set off on their horses out of Taiyuan and begin their journey. Midway, they stop by a rest stop, whose owner does not take payment for the drinks and food he serves travelers, but accepts a good story instead. So Xia Bing begins to narrate to him animatedly what they had gone through......

Wang Sheng suspects that SuSu's friend is also a 'demon', and has her monitored. Peirong panics when she discovers that her father has gone missing. Xia Bing manages to find Peirong's father dancing in the rain, holding a statue. 
Xiaowei (Xu Xu) soon finds out that Peirong's father is just pretending to be insane. So when Peirong's father sneaks out to meet Pang Yong, Xiaowei makes him hang himself. When his body is found, Peirong is devastate. She knows that Xiaowei is somehow responsible but she has no proof whatsoever.

The statue that Peirong's father always carries with him is found by Wang Sheng. He discovers a strange gadget within the statue, which resembles a weather forecasting device. Xiahou Xiang figures that it is a device used to predict rainfall. Xia Bing remembers that her grandfather had told her that some demons are afraid of water. So the group deduces that one of the demons, most likely SuSu's friends is that 'demon'. They continue their survaliance of SuSu.

Xiaoyi (the lizard demon) kills two gangsters who tried to molest SuSu. He finally manages to become (look) like a human and is delighted. Xiaowei reminds him to return before the sun sets. He rushes off to meet SuSu, unaware that Wang Sheng is keeping an eye on them. Xiaoyi meets SuSu at her shoe stall, and they spend a happy day together. When the sun sets, Xiaoyi begins to feel unwell. He becomes invisible before Wang Sheng can capture him.

Xiaoyi tells SuSu that he is an orphan and that he was the one that killed the two men who had tried to molest her. He accompanies her to Peirong's cosmetic shop and is worried when he sees Xiaowei glaring at him. Xiaoyi is moved that SuSu does not mind his background or what he did, but Xiaowei is jealous at his happiness.

Wang Sheng tells SuSu that Xiaoyi is the heart killer. Xiaoyi promises not to kill again and arranges to run away with SuSu. However, Xiaowei is angry that Xiaoyi refuses to kill people for their heart for her anymore. Xia Bing sees SuSu running away.

Xiaowei (Xu Xu) sends Xiaoyi (the lizard spirit) to kill the 'original' Xiaowei's sister-in-law, before she can identify her. Wang Sheng arranges to meet Peirong, hoping to mend and improve their relationship. However, Xiaowei turns up in his stead and apologizes on his behalf, which causes the meeting to end bitterly.

When Ling'er, the witness that Xia Bing had (and the sister-in-law of the 'original' Xiaowei) is killed, Xia Bing accuses Xiaowei (Xu Xu) of the killing. Even when Pang Yong attests to this, Wang Sheng refuses to believe them and even vouches for Xiaowei's innocence. Wang Sheng finds out that it was Peirong who had asked Xia Bing to check up on Xiaowei, so he admonishes her and tells her not to pick on Xiaowei anymore.

Despite Xia Bing insistence that Xiaowei is a demon, only Peirong believes her. Xiahou Xiang finds in strange that his toads are not able to find a single fly in the house (eaten by Xiaoyi). No one believes that Xiaowei is a demon as she did not go out during the time of the killing. Peirong confides in her father who tells her that there will be sunshine after rain.

Xiaoyi is delighted  that Xiaowei will treat SuSu eyes and return her sight if he kills one more man for her. So he kills a drunkard and takes his  heart, offering it to Xiaowei. Wang Sheng asks Pang Yong for assistance in the investigation, and he agrees. Meanwhile, Xia Bing leves Taiyuan as she had promised., but returns soon after as she had not promised that she would not return. Pang Yong does not believe Xiahou Xiang that his divination shows that there is more than one demon in Taiyuan.

Jealous of SuSu, Xiaowei suggests that she take SuSu skin, but Xiaoyi begs her not to harm SuSu. So Xiaowei tells Xiaoyi to find a pair of eyes that are suitable for SuSu, and he ends up killing girls who are known for their beautiful eyes. As promised, Xiaowei treats SuSu's eyes and she is able to see again.
Susu regains her sight and is eager to meet Xiaoyi, so she heads to Peirong's shop and asks about the Master Lin (Xiaoyi) she had been chatting with. When she goes to the Lin's residence to look for Xiaoyi, she learns that Master Lin has been dead for 4 years. Peirong tells her that perhaps Master Lin (Xiaoyi) had his reasons for keeping his real identity from her.

Pang Yong finds out that it was Peirong who asked Xia Bing to help him kick his alcohol addiction. Xia Bing invites Pang Yong to go demon catching with her. Xiaoyi tells Xiaowei that he is not Pang Yong's match.

SuSu cooks food for Xiaoyi (the lizard spirit), but he feels ill soon after he eats the (human) food. SuSu takes care of him. Wang Sheng turns up when Xiaoyi is making straw shoes with SuSu. Xiaoyi quickly hides himself. In his invisible state, Xiaoyi whispers to SuSu. Wang Sheng who has been keeping an eye on SuSu senses that SuSu seems to be talking to someone.

When SuSu goes to Peirong's shop to buy the same type of rouge Xiaoyi (stolen) had given her, a suspicious Peirong informs Wang Sheng. Yunyun, a employee and good friend of Peirong reminds Peirong to doll herself up and mend her relationship with Wang Sheng. However, Wang Sheng ignores Peirong. He also disregards Pang Yong's warning that the killer is nearby.

Xiaowei pretends to console Wang Sheng when he confides in her about Peirong and their estranged relationship. Xia Bing reminds Pang Yong that it is impossible for him to be with Peirong and that he should not harbor any such thought.

Peirong decides to move back to her parents' house for a while. On her way to her parent's house, she learns that someone is looking for Xiaowei and has posted a missing person poster. Peirong hands this poster to Xiahou Xiang as Pang Yong is not around. Xia Bing sets out to the 'original' Xiaowei's village.

Xiaowei is surprised that Peirong has returned so soon, especially after she said that she would be gone for a few days. Yunyun unwittingly tells Xiaowei that Peirong is still wary of her.

It is the water festival and SuSu happily splashes water on Xiaoyi, not knowing that water is is weakness. Although he is injured, Xiaoyi feels happy. He wants SuSu to regain her sight, so he promises Xiaowei that he will kill Peirong for her, on the condition that Xiaowei help SuSu regain her sight.

Pang Yong returns and reads the note that Xia Bing had left him, he also sees the missing persons' poster of a person that looks like Xiaowei. In the 'original' Xiaowei's village, Xia Bing learns that Xiaowei's skin had been taken away. She asks the sister-in-law to go back with her to Taiyuan to be her witness.

Xia Bing is insistent that they (she, Pang Yong m and Xiahou Xiang) on subduing Xiaowei (Xu Xu), but Pang Yong emphasizes that they need to have evidence first before they can do any subduing. Xia Bing learns that Xiahou Xiang has a toad, when he takes her to his workroom.
When Pang Yong wants to buy some wine, but has no money with him, Peirong offers to pay for him, but he refuses. She then tells him that Xiaowei was the one who killed her chef.

Although Peirong's father is muddle-headed, he does realize that they is something wrong between his daughter and Wang Sheng. A celebration is held for Peirong's father for his birthday, Xia Bing wanting to quickly subdue Xu Xu (Xiaowei) sneaks into the celebration together with Xiahou Xiang. They want to spike Xiaowei's drink in order for her to reveal her demon self.

Xiaowei attempts to harm Peirong's father but is interrupted. So she aggravates Pang Yong by telling him that Wang Sheng will soon be hers. He ends up drinking the wine meant for Xiaowei (to reveal her demon self), and lashes out at everyone in his drunken stupor.

Peirong hopes that Xia Bing would be able to help Pang Yong overcome his alcohol addiction. She tells Xia Bing how heroic and confident Pang Yong was. A far cry from his current self. Xia Bing agrees to help Pang Yong with his alcohol addiction. 
However, in her attempt to stop Pang Yong from drinking, she gets drunk instead. Seeing how hard Xia Bing is trying to help him, Pang Yong finally makes up his mind to stop drinking. Xia Bing enlists Pang Yong's help to make demon traps.

Xiaoyi (the lizard demon) is caught in a demon trap when he steals some rouge to give to SuSu. Upset that Pang Yong is drinking from his bottle, Xia Bing snatches the bottle and realizes that it is only water, not wine. Pang Yong and Xia Bing attack Xiaoyi. Pang Yong manages to injure Xiaoyi, impressing Xia Bing. She suspects that Pang Yong is the capable man that her grandfather had previously mentioned before his passing. Xia Bong starts to take a liking to Pang Yong.

Meanwhile, an injured Xiaoyi is happy when SuSu tends to his wounds and cooks for him...

Xia Bing's toad delivers a message to Pang Yong asking for help to release her from prison, but he refuses to help. In the end, Xia Bing manages to escape from prison with the help of a mysterious person, whom she later learns was Peirong.  She tells Peirong that she must exorcise the demon (Xiaowei/Xu Xu) before she leaves Taiuan.

Seeing Xiaoyi's (the lizard spirits) new straw shoes (made by SuSu), Xiaowei sneers at him, but he continues to see XuXu. 

One day, Gao Xiang escorts Peirong home from the temple and Wang Sheng questions her about Xia Bing's escape from prison. She is peeved when he asks her. Meanwhile, Pang Yong listens to Xiahou Xiang's narration of the missing hearts, but does not see the correlation between the murders and their missing hearts with the doing of demons.

When Peirong realizes that she had unwittingly revealed that she had asked the chef to help her save Xia Bing from the prison, she tries to save the chef from Xiaowei, but it is in vain.

While happily chatting with SuSu, Xiaoyi is summoned by Xiaowei.On his way to meet Xiaowei, Xiaoyi gets into a fight with Wang Sheng and leaves fragments of his straw shoe (made for him by SuSu).

Pang Yong and Xiahou Xiang investigate a cave with claw marks onthe cave walls. Pang Yong starts to believe Xia Bing's theory about demons...

Wang Sheng remembers how his vow to love Peirong for the of their lives. He refuses Xiaowei (Xu Xu) to wait on him and reconciles with Peirong. Wang Sheng is shocked when he finds himself thinking of Xiaowei when he is being intimate with Peirong.

The lizard spirit, Xiaoyi, attacks Pang Yong, but leaves in a hurry when he gets injured by a demon trap. After viewing the demon trap that injured Xiaoyi (the lizard spirit), Xiaowei deduces that Xia Bing is nearby.

When Peirong is going back to visit her parents, Wang Sheng asks that she takes Xiaowei along with her. At Peirong's parents' house (the Chens), Peirong learns that her father is ill in health and is often muddleheaded. He gets lost and Xiaowei uses her skills to locate him.

At this moment, Xia Bing assumes that Pang Yong had broken her demon trap, and starts to bicker with him. Pang Yong sees Peirong's father, he is about to tell Pang Yong something, but Xiaowei turns up. Xiaowei pretends to faint when Peirong pushes her away from her father.

Back home, Pang Yong defends Peirong when Wang Sheng scolds Peirong for hurting Xiaowei. Peirong asks Pang Yong to leave, she later finds him drinking alone. She hopes that Pang Yong would be able to help her solve the mystery that surrounds Xiaowei, as well as the murders. Xia Bing eats up all of Pang Yong's food and tells him that there is a demon in the Wang residence as her staff keeps lighting up.

Wang Sheng takes care of the "injured" Xiaowei, but he refuses to stay in her room for the night. Xiaowei warns Xiaoyi, the lizard spirit, not to be rash as she wants to be the main waife, Mrs Wang, and not just a concubine.

While out on an errand for Xiawei, Xiaoyi meets a blind girl named SuSu, and helps her clear some vines. He is happy when SuSu makes him a pair of straw shoes.

Pang Yong is too drunk to go out with Xia Bing to investigate, so she ends up in Xiaowei's room alone and asserts that Xiaowei (Xu Xu) must be eating human hearts. Xu Xu insists that she is Xiaowei not Xu Xu, but her emotions are stirred at the mention of Long Yun. Wang Sheng appears just as Xia Bing is about to stab Xiaowei (Xu Xu).

He decides to stay with Xiaowei for a while as he is worried about her. Xiaoyi senses that Xiaowei is unhappy but she denies it. Xia Bing creates a ruckus in prison, but no one believes her story of demons.

When the culprit (the lizard spirit) gets caught in a trap set by Wang Sheng and his men, they try to capture the culprit, but the culprit is too powerful.

Peirong decides to put up at Linlin's place, but the lizard spirit turns up and kills Linlin. Upset, Peirong confronts Xiaowei, but Xiaowei claims she was sewing with Xiaorou the whole night. Wang Sheng does not believe Peirong's accusations that Xiaowei the demon that has been committing the murders and stealing the hearts.

Peirong tries to get holy beads from an old monk. She has a nightmare and refuses to leave her room. She becomes even more upset when Wang Sheng still does not believe her. When Peirong learns that Xiaowei has gone to her parents' home to look after them, she rushes home.

Although what she is saying (that Xiaowei is a demon, and committing the murders), is ridiculous her father chooses to trust her and analyzes that what Xiaowei is trying to do is to make everyone lose their trust in Peirong. So Peirong pretends to make up with Xiaowei.

While on his quest to nab the culprit, Wang Sheng comes across Pang Yong, and they go home together. When Xiaowei sees how Peirong looks after Pang Yong, she asks Xiaorou (the maid) about their relationship.

The lizard spirit notes how Wang Sheng goes to Pang Yong's aid and even pays Pang Yong's wine bills. He reports to Xiaowei that Pang Yong is a useless alcoholic.

Xi Bing ends up in Taiyuan, the city that Wang Sheng, Peirong, Pang Yong and Xiaowei are at. Pang Yong unwittingly falls into a demon trap that was set by Xia Bing. After a misunderstanding with a thief, Xia Bing gets her lantern back and gets acquainted with Pang Yong.

Meanwhile, Xiaowei begins on her plot to become the new Mrs Wang by sowing seeds of discord. Wang Sheng is not happy when Peirong asked Pang Yong to come back without checking with him first.

Peirong looks for Pang Yong abd tells him what is happening between Wang Sheng and Xiaowei, and the murders with the missing hearts. She hopes that Pang Yong will be able to help her find out the truth. When Peirong reaches home, she sees that Wang Sheng is having the reunion dinner without her.

When Peirong picks Yuan Ren as a suitable marriage candidate for Xiaowei (Xu Xu), Gao Xiang tells Wang Sheng that Peirong wants to marry Xiaowei off faster because she is jealous. Peirong is upset when Wang tells her to apologize to Xiaowei. But, Xiaowei plays mediator and helps the couple reconcile.

Xiaowei looks up Yuan Ren and kills him in the streets. At the same time a man is killed in a prison cell and his heart stolen. Everyone is baffled as the prison doors were locked.

The lizard spirit continues to kill people and puts the blame on a prisoner named Yang Gang, who had disappeared from the prison. He presents all the hearts of the people he had killed to Xiaowei, who warns him not to kill anyone in the Wang household. The lizard spirit even kills Magistrate Li.

Xiaowei is seriously weakened after she uses her powers to revive Wang Sheng. Wang Sheng had fallen off a cliff after a fight with a mysterious man, whom he assumed was Yang Gang. The lizard spirit continues to kill people for their hearts in a bid to strengthen the weakened Xiaowei.

During the time that Wang Sheng is recovering, Peirong takes good care of him. Seeing how loving the couple is makes Xiaowei even more jealous. Peirong urges Wang Sheng to resign and stop the investigation into the case of the murders with missing hearts. Wang Sheng is about to do so, but Gao Xiang changes his mind by urging him to continue his investigations as the magistrate's office is short handed.

Although all the evidence points to the escaped prisoner, Yang Gang, Wang Sheng is not convinced. He leads his men to a cave where his finds Yang Gang's body. Hoping to lure the real culprit, Wang Sheng gives Yang Gang a grand funeral... The lizard spirits turns up and a fight ensues. Xiaowei rushes to the place where Wang Sheng and the lizard spirit are fighting. She makes it rain to weaken the lizard spirit as he loses his power when exposed to rain.

One day, Peirong, when looking for Xiaowei, sees her painting her human skin. She hints to Wang Sheng that a spirit may be responsible for the killings, but no one believes her. So Peirong and Linlin seek help from Sai. Afraid that Sai will ruin her plan, Xiaowei decides to kill him.

Seeing how thoughtful and caring Wang Sheng is towards Peirong, Xiaowei (Xu Xu) gets jealous and frustrated. Seeing that Wang Sheng likes to carve wooden figurines and is good at it, she insists that Wang Sheng carve a wooden figurine for her.

Meanwhile Peirong helps to pay off the debt of a chef, in hopes that he will become her family chef. However, despite all that she has done, the chef turns down her request. When she is home, she feels bad that Wang Sheng had to cook his own dinner. And Wang Sheng is not happy that Peirong spends most of her time in the restaurant, ignoring him.

When Peirong is giving Xiaowei some cosmetics, she notices that Xiaowei's neck is rotting and assumes that it is due to the cold weather. So she uses rouge to help Xiaowei cover up the rotting skin.

Seeing how persistent Peirong has been in trying to persuade the chef to work for their family, Wang Sheng is moved. Xiaowei uses her magic to make the stubborn chef take up the job offer. Weak, Xiaowei asks the lizard spirit to get human hearts for her, but he is unable to do so because of the rain.

Peirong feels uneasy when she sees the wooden figurine that Wang Sheng made for Xiaowei. She asks Xiaowei to help her out at the shop. Business at the restaurant improves after Xiaowei starts working there. Xiaowei vows tha she will take over everything that Peirong has, including the love Peirong receives from everyone.

Gao Xiang resigns from the army because he wants to take care of Linlin and their baby.

Wang Sheng recalls the fire at his house in his old hometown when a fire breaks out nearby. that night, he is unable to fall asleep and ends up going for a walk and meets Xiaowei, whom he confides in.

Peirong wakes up to find that Wang Sheng had written a letter to inform her that he has decided to go back to his old hometown to pay his respects. Xiaowei accompanies him to his parents grave. Wang Sheng hugs her when she consoles him and Peirong reaches the grave just in time to witness the scene. Peirong apologies to Wang Sheng for spending too much time in the restaurant and encourages Wang Sheng to confide in her.

Back at the restaurant, Xiaowei starts to gain popularity. Worried that Wang Sheng has fallen for Xiaowei, Peirong loses concentration.

When celebrating Wang Sheng's birthday, Peirong sees him give Xiaowei his jade pendant after receiving a birthday present from her. She suggests that they find a husband for Xiaowei, and Xiaowei does not object to the idea. However, Wang Sheng fails to find a suitable suitor for Xiaowei, depsite the many men who come asking for her hand in marriage.

The series starts off with a fight scene in a seedy underground fight club. Here we are introduced to Li Ge Xiao, one of the main protagonists of the series. During Li Ge Xiao’s fight, a well dressed man enters the club and watches the fight intently. Although Le Ge Xiao is beaten up badly, he manages to win the fight.

When it is time for the interval before the final fight, the club’s owner praises Li Ge Xiao and reminds him that he has to lose the final fight, and he will get his reward when it is over. Li Ge Xiao replies that since he is paid he will do his job, making the owner glee in delight.

However, just before the fight starts, the well dressed man throws some really big ingots (money) and tells Li Ge Xiao to win. Upon hearing that, Li Ge Xiao easily beats up his opponent, a big burly guy, with ease. His opponent is knocked out, just in time for Li Ge Xiao to catch the money. This goes to show that he was just holding back during the first fight.

The owner of the fight club is naturally upset, and confronts Li Ge Xiao, asking him how could he do this to him and ruin his business. When the well-dressed man claims that Li Ge Xiao is his brother, the owner is enraged and orders his men to kill the both of them. Unfortunately for the fight club’s owner, both the well dressed man and Li Ge Xiao easily beat the daylights of his men. Furious he orders more of his men to attack. Not wanting to prolong the fight, Li Ge Xiao snatches the well dressed man’s token of authority and displays it. When the club owner and his men see the token, they tremble in fear and apologize. It turns oout that the well dressed guy is Ying Wu Qiu, commander of the special army, and Li Ge Xiao’s ex-colleague.

Before his downfall from grace, Li Ge Xiao was the previous commander of the special army, and a high ranking official. However, due to the schemes of Yan Song, a corrupt and influential official, his beloved wife, Ru Yi, died. His wife’s death caused him to be a desolate man who drowned his sorrows in alcoholic. From than on, Li Ge Xiao became a wanted fugitive.
 
The reason Ying Wu Qiu sought out Li Ge Xiao was because he needs his help in retrieving the stolen gold for disaster relief from the corrupt high ranking official, Yan Song. Li Ge Xiao is initially adamant on not rendering any help, but becomes hesitant when he sees the plight of the disaster victims, who have come to the city where he is at to seek refuge.In a final desperate attempt, Ying Wu Qiu reminds Li Ge Xiao of his late wife, and asked him if that would be what she wanted him to do. Ying Wu Qiu also says that he is disappointed in him.

Li Ge Xiao wanders off to think what his should do. He even goes to visit his teacher and asks him what he should do. But his teacher tells him that he already knows what he should do and should just do ahead and do it, because no matter what he tells him, Li Ge Xiao will still go and help.

Finally, Li Ge Xiao decides to help Ying Wu Qiu retrieve back the gold. He tells Ying Wu Qiu that he will do it on his own terms and conditions, he does not want any help from the officials, and neither is he going to get the underworld to help. He will gather together his own team, all he needs Ying Wu Qiu to do is to get the money ready in exchange for the help of these people Li Ge Xiao is going to gather. Ying Wu Qiu is grateful and willingly obliges.

So off Li Ge Xiao goes to gather his team. The first person is Chai Hu. Chai Hu is a fighter with extraordinary strength. However, he does not have much brain. He is the character that usually provides some comic relieve for the series. Apparently years before, Chai Hu and Li Ge Xiao had an agreement: Chai Hu was not to fight for 5 years until he met Li Ge Xiao again and have a fight to the death. Chai Hu had fought against Li Ge Xiao previously but had always lost, disgruntled, his only goal in life since then was to win Li Ge Xiao. He is curious why Li Ge Xiao would break their 5 year agreement. When Li Ge Xiao tells him that he needs Chai Hu’s help, Chai Hu is smug and readily agrees.

Together with Chai Hu, they go on to recruit their next member, He Xiaomei, a master of disguise, hidden weapons and medicine. They find him in a singing opera troupe, singing. Unfortunately, He Xiaomei does not have a very good singing voice, and Chai Hu finds him irritating. After the show, they head backstage to try to recruit Xiaomei.

Chai Hu teases Xiaomei for being too feminine and not like a man, which offends him. But it turns out that Xiaomei is a man who loves money. He agrees when he finds out that there will be monetary rewards.

With two members recruited, they head off to recruit the final member, the elusive Divine Sparrow Thief, Yan Sanniang, who can steal anything and open almost any lock. Recruiting Sanniang takes more effort and convincing, but they manage to do so.

Now with the team in tact, they plan on how to get the gold out from the heavily guarded manor...

Peirong and Wang Sheng are going through their marriage ceremony, there is a heavy atmosphere as many of Pang Yong's men are not happy that Wang Sheng stole Peirong from Pang Yong. Just as they are about to go through the rites, Pang Yong shows up. There is tension as Pang Yong congratulates the couple. Pang Yong eventually gives Peirong up to Wang Sheng, and disappears again. Wang Sheng vows to love Peirong forever in the nuptial chamber.

Meanwhile, Xiaowei (Xu Xu) finds out that Yu Zhi does not love her, as he realizes that she is no longer the same Xiaowei that he used to know. Determined to make him fall in love with her, she prepares food for him infused with her magic. She ends up exerting her energy, and requires the lizard spirit to steal human hearts for her. She ends up killing Yu Zhi with one blow when he tells her that he cannot love her anymore.

More than two years have passed, and Pang Yong is nowhere to be found. Wang Sheng consoles Peirong that Pang Yong is alright and Xia Bing is still looking for Xu Xu.

All this while, the lizard spirit has been by Xiaowei's (Xu Xu) side and loves her dearly. However, Xiaowei is determined to find "true" love, so she sneaks in to the bandits stockade in a search for someone who would love her fully. She kills some bandits and covers for herself when she is questioned by the chief. Xiaowei is not concerned when the lizard spirit informs her that Xia Bing has been looking for her all this while, and wants revenge for her granfather's death.

Xiaowei tries to get the chief bandit to fall in love with her. She ends up being upset when she realizes that the bandit chief still misses his late wife. She digs out his heart. Just at this moment, Wang Sheng leads his men in an attack on the stockade. He and his men manage to destroy the stockade successfully.

Xiaowei pretends to be a woman whom the bandits have captured and she ends up tagging along with Wang Sheng and his men back. She claims that she is from the same hometown as Wang Sheng and is disappointed when Wang Sheng has no impression of her.

Soon, Xiaowei's lust for human hearts relapses when her skin starts to rot... Xiaohu Xiang discovers the bodies of the missing soldiers and realizes that their hearts have been stolen.

Having seen how loving Wang Sheng and Peirong are, Xiaowei is jealous and decides to get close to the bored Wang Sheng when Peirong is busy with the business. Oblivious of Xiaowei's intention, Peirong takes her in.

As for Xia Bing, she ends up getting drank when she fails to find Xu Xu (Xiaowei). When she is unconscious her staff starts to react....

Synopsis
The previous adaptations of Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei include a 1994 HK film, a 2005 TVB series, and a 2008 SBC Korean. Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei is a drama series based on folktales of a Robin-like hero during the Ming dynasty.

Bu Bu Jing Xin (步步惊心)

This drama is adapted from an online novel of the same name, chapters were being released periodically. When it got popular, the writer managed to secure a publishing deal and she revised the book for the printed version. If you would like to read the story in English, you can read the translated version here.

The story revolves around a 25 year-old modern day woman, Zhang Xiao, who ends up in a car accident, only to wake up to find herself in the body of a 16 year-old Manchu girl, Maertai Ruoxi, living in the 18th century Qing Dynasty. In her new life, she becomes deeply entangled in Aisin Gioro princes' battle for the throne.

Delivering food to Wang Sheng everyday gets Linlin teased by the soldiers. Gao Xiang, one of Pang Yong's men, is upset by the gossip as he likes Linlin. Wang Sheng finally rejects Linlin, but he did so in an untactful manner and ended up upsetting her to the stage where she threatened to jump off from the city wall.

Both Pang Yong and Wang Sheng are unsuccessful in their attempt to talk her out of it. So when she jumps, Guo Xiang uses his body to cushion her fall, injuring them both. Pang Yong blames Wang Sheng for being too direct with Linlin.

Peirong tries to tell Pang Yong that she does not like him, but he chooses to ignore it. After the battle with the bandits, Wang Sheng tells Peirong that Pang Yong did not return with them as he saw the jade pendant she gave him.

As they came back triumphant, the King wants to promote Wang Sheng to marshal. Pang Yong's men are not happy with the decision for stealing Peirong from Pang Yong. Although Wang Sheng tries to reject the promotion, claiming that Pang Yong was the one that deserved the promotion more as he was crucial to the battle being success. However, as Pang Yong had left his post without permission, Wang Sheng has not choice but to accept the promotion.

A few months later, Linlin and Guo Xiang are married, while Peirong and Wang Sheng's relations is still not confirmed. Linlin is eight months pregnant when Peirong visits hers. Linlin encourages Peirong to ight for her happiness. Wang Sheng takes Peirong out on a horse ride and they get to know each other better.

Pang Yong barges into Peirong's room on night and asks her if she had ever loved him. He leaves disappointed when she apologies. Since then Pang Yong's whereabouts are unknown until Peirong and Wang Sheng's wedding day.

Meanwhile, Xu Xu visits Long Yun and overhears that two people had sneaked into the prision to rescue Ye Yi. Xu Xu guesses that it must be Old Xia and Xia Bing. She urges Long Yun to save them. They are saved just before the magistrate is about to torture them. Old Xia is angry that Xu Xu went to look for Long Yun and wants to subdue her, Xiao Hong (Ye Yi's wife and swan demon) stops him.

Long Yun allows Old Xia to pose as a soothsayer, he manages to con the magistrate into releasing Ye Yi. The magistrate agrees to do so in three days time. Old Xia has no choice but to return Xiao Hong to her original form, and she does so willingly. Ye Yi is upset and decides to live in seclusion with the swan version of Xiao Hong for the rest of his life. Old Xia accepts Long Yun as his disciple, and the tradegy begins....

Xu Xu is about to marry Long Yun when he discovers she is a demon. She injures him badly and kills him when he refuses to say if he had loved her. Old Xia tries to bring her to her senses, but she is too emotionally distraught to understand what he is trying to tell her; misunderstanding his kind intentions. She ends up injuring him badly. Xia Bing at this time is unconscious, by the time she arrives, she finds Old Xia almost dead. She tries to heal him with her limited knowledge of medicine and regrets not learning from him his skills properly.

He tells her that his injuries are too serious, and that his only worry is her. It is here that we learn that he is actually her grandfather. He had kept her parentage a secret as he did not want to endanger her life (apparently the blood of an demon exorcist has the power to kill demons). Her parents had been killed by a demon, and Old Xia regretted respecting his son wishes to become something other then an exorcist, resulting in his death. After burying her grandfather, Xia Bing vows to travel to the ends of the earth to find and subdue Xu Xu.

Xu Xu upset about being disfigured, is jealous of Xiao wei, a human girl about to be married. So Xu Xu kills Xiao wei and takes her skin with the help of a lizard spirit. Xu Xu changes her looks and even marries Xiao wei's groom. She is from now on Xiao wei and not Xu Xu....

Linlin dolls up herself and stays up late to prepare for an outing with Wang Sheng. Unfortunately, she ends up oversleeping and missing the opportunity to go out with Wang Sheng. So Wang Sheng and Peirong have no other choice than to set off to the temple first.

At the temple, Peirong is confused when the divination lot she picks is the same as Wang Sheng, and the temple seer calls them a perfect match. Meanwhile back at the Chen residence, Peirong's parents and Pang Yong are happy to see the divorce letter in Peirong's room.

Peirong invites Wang Sheng for a meal at her home. Pang Yong is happy to see Wang Sheng and thanks him for the divorce letter, upsetting Peirong so much so that she loses her appetite. Her mother urges Peirong to give her happiness and future with care thought.

As she as unable to meet Wang Sheng, Linlin is worried that Wang Sheng is unhappy with her for failing to turn up for their date. Her love for Wang Sheng moves Peirong. Wang Sheng is grateful when Linlin serves him food from his hometown, but he is unable to accept her love. However, Peirong refuses to help him reject Linlin.

Ye Yi explains to Xia Bing that he was maligned by the magistrate, and his wife , Xiao Hong, (a swan demon) had killed in order to save him. He explain that he saved the magistrate's son with his toad oil. But when the magistrate visited him to thank him, he was besotted with Xiao Hong and coveted her. In order to have Xiao Hong, the magistrate sets Ye Yi up. So Ye Yi wishes to free his wife with his death instead of seeing her suffer.

When Old Xia discovers Xiao Hong, she begs him to save Ye Yi. She narrates to him the same story as to how Ye Yi was captured and how the people were killed: she did not think much of it as all she wanted to do was to save her husband.

Xu Xu accepts Long Yun's love and returns to Ye Yi's home just in time to her Xiao Hong narrate her love story with Ye Yi. Upon hearing such a love story, Xu Xu also longs for such a touching love affair as well.

Despite wielding his cherry wood sword, Old Xia is unable to find any demons. Instead Xu Xu is injured and reduced to her original demon form. She loses control of herself and even attempts to eat Xia Bing. Fortunately, she is able to control herself at the most critical moment. Xu Xu begs Old Xia to kill her, but he gives her another chance.

Old Xia and company, manage to find Ye Yi's home, where there are many bottles of toad oil. They find Ye Yi in a secret chamber and they find out that the magistrate wants Ye Yi killed because of the toad oil. At this juncture, the soldiers and Long Yun arrive. Xia Bong fights with the soliers and almost falls, but Long Yun saves her; also wining her heart. Old Xia gives Xu Xu a pill, hoping to mask her demon aura, and that Long Yun would not notice that she is a demon.

Long Yun asks Old Xia to let him take Ye Yi back to the magistrate's office. Xu Xu makes some noises unintentionally, arousing Long Yun's suspicions. He dashes out of the house, but realeased Xu Xu when he finds out that she is his disciple. After the encounter with Long Yun, Xia Bing developes a crush on him and finds herself unable to sleep.

Back at the magistrate's office, Long Yun stops the magistrate from Ye Yi as he wants to use Ye Yi to lure the evil spirits out in the open. Back at Ye Yi's home, Old Xia and his disciples are looking for the demon to appear. Old Xia suspects that Ye Yi's wife, Xia Hong, is the demon and is determined to subdue her.

So while Xu Xu lures Long Yun away, as Long Yun has seen Old Xia's prowess and wants him to also take him in as a disciple, an Xia Bing infiltrating the prison to get more information from Ye Yi, Old Xia confronts Xia Hong, a demon of the bird kind. She explains that she just wanted to save her husband Ye Yi from the evil magistrate who coveted her for her beauty. We also learn the reason why Yun Long hates demons so much and wants to eliminate them all: his mother was scared to death by a wolf demon girl, whom they took in.

Meanwhile, Wang Sheng and Pang Yong release a bandit so that they would be able to find out the bandits hideout. They not only manage to find the hideout, but also destroy it, saving many missing children that were captured by the bandits. Pang Yong lets Wang Sheng return the children to their homes so that the people of Taiyuan would have a better impression of Wang Sheng.

Unwilling to ruin Pang Yong and Peirong' relationship, Wang Sheng decides to divorce Peirong before leaving Taiyuan. Linlin, Peirong's friend is happy that Wang Sheng has divorced Peirong, thinking that she has a chance. She has no idea that Peirong has started to like Wang Sheng. Both girls dash out when thy learn that Wang Sheng has left to fight the bandits.

After an intense confrontation, Wang Sheng decided to stay. wang Sheng tells Peirong that he has no feelings for Linlin. While Peirong convinces herself taht she is not in love with Wang Sheng.

The magistrate of the town with many dead bodies, which are rumored to be committed by evil spirits, hires another demon hunter name Long Yun. Old Xia, Xia Bing and Xu Xu, find themselves at a house in the woods and meets Ye Yi, who tells them about his plight. Although Old Xia is sympathic towards Ye Yi, he is convinced that Ye Yi is related to the spirits that committed the mass murder in town. Long Yun turns up with the soldiers and Old Xia let Ye Yi leave with the. During this encounter, Long Yun and Xu Xu are attracted to each other. Once captured, Ye Yi is tortured in the prison.

Meanwhile, a celebration is held in Pang Yong's honor. Pang Yong's men issue Wang Sheng a challenge, and they are taken aback by his skills and magnanimity. Pang Yong recognizes Wang Sheng's potential.

Peirong and her friend, Linlin, are attracted to Wang Sheng. Pang Yong is upset when Peirong rejects his marriage proposal. Dejected, he asks Wang Sheng out for drinks and confides in him. Wang Sheng suggests Pang Yong to buy something that Peirong likes in order to win her over.

However, Peirong is unsure who to pick, she is torn between Pang Yong and Wang Sheng.

The bandits threaten to kill everyone in Taiyuan, unless they hand Wang Sheng over to them. So when the magistrate of Taiyuan turns up to arrest Wang Sheng, Pang Yong vows to protect Taiyuan.

Peirong looks Wang Sheng up at the camp, and is awkward when Pang Yonh turns up as well. Not wanting to complicate matters and jeopardize Peirong and Pang Yong's relationship, Wang Sheng decides to leave Taiyuan. He still persists in leaving Taiyuan, even after Peirong expressed her feelings for him.

Faced with the bandits, Wang Sheng fights them alone. Until Pang Yong, Peirong and their troops turn up to help him fight the bandits. They convince Wang Sheng to stay on Taiyuan. It is obvious to everyone that Linlin likes Wang Sheng, but Wang Sheng insists that she does not suit him.

While carrying an unconscious Peirong out of his house, Wang Sheng encounters Pang Yong, who is Peirong's childhood friend. They get into a fight, until Peirong regains consciousness and tells Pang Yong that Wang Sheng was the one who helped her escape. The misunderstanding is cleared and the fighting between the two men is stopped. It is at this juncture that bandits attack both of them from all corners, and the two men team up to defeat their attackers.

Worried at what is happening (with the attackers) in the city he lives in, Wang Sheng heads home to find that his parents have been killed by a group of bandits. His home is on fire. Wang Sheng fights with the remaining bandits. Peirong, seeing flames coming out of Wang Sheng's residence, urges Pang Yong to go and help Wang Sheng. Pang Yong arrives just in time and saves Wang Sheng from being killed by a bandit.

Xu Xu is also in the city that is raided by bandits, she fights some bandits. Old Xia turns up and exposes her identity as a demon. Just as he is about to subdue her, she escapes and risks her life to save Wang Shenf from the fire by creating rain. Old Xia is moved by her gesture and agrees to take her in as his disciple. He give her a set of rules that she must follow: she cannot reveal her true form, cannot use her powers, cannot fall in love and get married. She agrees, eager to be human, something that Old Xia cannot comprehend. Xia Bing and Xu Xu become sworn sisters after Old Xia takes in Xu Xu as his disciple.

Pang Yong and Wang Sheng kill all the bandits that attacked the city. Amongst the bandits were the sons of the chief bandit. Upon hearing that Wang Sheng has killed his sons, the chief vows revenge.

After burying his parents, Wang Sheng decides to lead a wanderer's life. Peirong nd Pang Yong invite him to their hometown Taiyuan. On the way to Taiyuan, Pang Yong's integrity and Peirong's concerned touches and comforts Wang Sheng. Pang Yong shares with Wang Sheng that his parents were also killed by bandits and it was Peirong's parents who took him in as a foster son. Determined to be useful and make his foster family pround, Pang Yong became a commander in the army.

When they are back in Taiyuan, Peirong narrates to her parents what happened and how Wang Sheng saved her from the marriage. Pang Yong's men are unable to comprehend why Pang Yong would allow Wang Sheng to come to Taiyuan, and even welcome his rival-in-love. Pang Yong is firm in his belief that Wang Sheng is a good man who can contribute to Taiyuan.

The townsfolk of Taiyuan beat Wang Sheng up because of the crimes committed by his tyrant father. Peirong pleads on his behalf to appease the people, worrying her parents that she may have fallen in love with Wang Sheng.

Meanwhile, Old Xia and his two female disciples chance upon a town with many dead bodies, which are rumored to be committed by evil spirits.

Wang Sheng is the son of a prince, making him the young master of the Wang family. His father forces him into a marriage with Chen Peirong. Peirong is unwilling to marry Wang Sheng but is coerced into the marriage when her family is threatened. Unhappy about the forced marriage, Wang Sheng runs away.

While hiding from his father's guards, he encounters Xu Xu, a fox demon in her animal form. She is trapped in a demon trap (which looks similar to a hunting trap). Feeling sorry for her, Wang Sheng releases Xu Xu from the trap. In the time that it took time to free Xu Xu, his father's guards catch up with him. Wang Sheng agrees to go home with them. Grateful to Wang Sheng for saving her, Xu Xu, takes on human form and decides to look for him to thank him.

On the day of Wang Sheng's wedding, both Wang Sheng and Peirong plam to escape together. Mrs Wang, Wang Sheng's mother agrees to help them escape as she feels sorry for them.

Meanwhile, while on her search for Wang Sheng, Xu Xu encounters Old Xia and Xia Bing, his female disciple; they are demon hunters. Although they are demon hunters, Xu Xu somehow manages to befriend Xia Bing.
