Angry Birds: App Review

categories: , , ,
What is all the hype about “Angry Birds”? It seems to be phenomenal the rate of success this game has achieved. The objective of the game is to crush the enemy (in this case pigs were want to eat the birds eggs, making them “angry”), through game play that is physics based and requires logic, skill and force. Maybe it is the concept, or the fluid graphics and game play that propelled it into success or it might have been the marketing and the timing, whatever the case its success cannot be disputed with merchandise appearing as well and it being made available for PCs and Macs.

Having been one of the most popular games on the Apple market (iPhone/iPod/iPad), it has finally made its way to the Android market. Basically, you get to hurl the angry birds at loosely made defensive forts made from glass, wood, and stone with pigs inside, and the aim is to destroy all the pigs at each level with as little moves possible. You get more points if you achieve destroying the pigs with as little moves as possible, destroy as much structure as you can, and have remaining birds that have not been used.

There are different birds with different abilities: to name a few, the default red bird has no special properties, while the blue bird splits into three with a second touch, or the black bird which explodes when tapped...Read More>>

The model stopped visiting night clubs as his girlfriend Jolin Tsai's concert tour in China comes to an end. Previously, model Vivian Dawson was spotted in a night club with a younger female model, while his girlfriend and pop princess Jolin Tsai was away in China, on her concert tour.

When photos of Vivian and his date were published, the media constantly hounded Jolin when she returned to Taiwan, wanting her comment on the incident. This caused a strain in the couple's relationship.

A few days ago, Jolin was in Nanjing for the final stop of her Myself concert tour. That night, Vivian was spotted with his friends at a night market, after work.

The model first accompanied his friends to the food market to buy some liquorice guava, deep-fried chicken and other snacks. While those around him feast on the food, Vivian, who is watching his weight, resisted the temptation to eat.

The chatty Vivian did not eat anything, but chose to converse with his friends in a mix of Chinese and English.

The model, who loves to jog, also walked faster than the rest of his friends. When the traffic light turned red, Vivian crossed the street before his friends managed to. Waiting for the light to turn green again, the model even practiced a few of Jolin's dance move to entertain himself.

Later, his female friends left first, leaving Vivian and three of his male friends at an internet café, where they spent the rest of their evening.

With the success of the original drama “Fated To Love You” and its spin-off “(Drunken To) Love You”, SETTV’s executive VP Su Li-Mei and “Fated” series director Chen Ming-Zhang are already planning for its third installment. Recent rumors spreading from Chen’s and Su’s micro-blog reveal their desire to cast Jerry Yan as their lead. Su admits that she has been in touch with the actor, but says she wants to design a character that will fit Yan well. She giggled, “Every time I see him, he asks why I don’t get him to film a drama. Actually, I’ve always been thinking what we need to make a drama that is the most suitable for him.”

Yan has just completed filming the mainland drama, “我的燦爛人生” (My Brilliant Life), which is also directed by Chen Ming-Zhang and is an adaptation of the popular Korean drama, "Brilliant Legacy". During the filming, he lost 7kgs, weighing only 65kgs at a height of 181cm. Luckily, he has already recovered by working out and eating specially made meals by his mom.

Amazing Sudoku: App Review

With the many available Sudoku games made available on the Apple App Store, there are various designs and graphics that offer different game play experience, most of them plain and unappealing. I happened to chance upon Amazing Sudoku, which is currently available for $1.99 for the full version, when it was offered free for download one fine day (lucky me). There is also the free version, which limits the difficulty.

Some people may deem the colorful background and graphics too distracting, but I think that it adds a nice touch to an otherwise “boring” game of Sudoku. Within Amazing Sudoku, there are two modes of game play: Classic and Magic, each with 3 difficulty settings...Read more>>

Sally's Spa: App Review

Time management games are plenty on the Apple App store, and Sally’s Spa is just one of those games that is actually entertaining and enjoyable. Similar to Diner Dash in concept: you are running a salon (helping Sally) and have to serve the customers as best and as fast as you can. And yes, you guessed it, it is one of the games that I actually bought and so here are my thoughts on it. There is also a lite version available.

There are different locations, scenarios, customers, and upgrades of the spa’s equipment (e.g. Sauna, nail station, spa, massage table, and hair station). As you advance, you can also hire staff to speed up the process. The objective of the game is to get all the customers that come through your spa to complete the various treatments and leave with a smile on their faces and a huge tip for you. You are also able to sell various products to earn extra money. There is a chart that tells you what products customers’ would be interested in buying that day, and an indication of how well the items might sell...Read more>>

Selina Jen helps to promote Hebe Tien's latest album

The bride-to-be showed her tight friendship with her band mate. It is no secret that the three girls from Taiwanese girl group S.H.E have always shared a sister-like relationship.

Recently, a still-undergoing physiotherapy Selina Jen has been actively promoting band mate's Hebe Tien's latest solo album My Love on her microblog.

Decked in a pink T-shirt, red pants and a pair of red flip-flops, Selina uploaded a photo she took during one of her physiotherapy sessions, in a room specially prepared by her management agency, HIM International Music.

In the photo, Selina's arms and legs were covered in pressure suits, and she appeared to be in good spirits as the joy of being a bride radiated from her gleeful face. The starlet held Hebe's new album in her right hand, while she carried a shopping bag -- which contained her pet dog Pinky -- on the other hand.

The 29-year-old cheekily captioned the photo as: "I bought a puppy today."

As it was S.H.E's 10th anniversary yesterday, HIM released a video clip, which featured the three girls together, on S.H.E's official fan site.

Selina later expressed happily on her microblog, "I am filled with joy. Thank God for giving me a pair of superstar sisters."

Show Luo denied entry into casino

The Taiwanese pop star was suspected to be underage at an American casino. Dubbed the 'Asian Dancing King', Taiwanese singer Show Luo has been reaping in big bucks in recent years.

Two weeks ago, the pop star held a concert tour in the US with performances in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and attracted more than 25,000 concertgoers. After his concert in New York, Show wanted to bring his buddies -- dubbed the Party Boys -- to a casino initially. However, he was denied entry because he was suspected to be underaged.

The singer's entourage was forced to leave since Show forgot to bring out his passport and had no other identification documents with him. Despite being turned away, Show laughed and said, "I'm really happy that someone actually thought I'm that young."

The group ended up going for a meal and did some catching up instead. According to previous Taiwanese media reports, if each ticket for his US shows was sold at USD$100 (SGD$124), it was estimated that the singer would have bagged at least NT$75 million (SGD$200,000) on this recent tour.

Not only did the singer gained major support from his fans in the US and profited from it, the local San Francisco authorities also presented him with the Most Outstanding Artiste award.

Furthermore, Show celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival in San Francisco, as his concert there fell on the same day. The singer's mother, who turned up for his performance, was upset that her son could not have any mooncakes during the festive season.

The filial Show comforted his mother on stage, saying, "It's okay, even though I can't see the moon. Knowing that my mother is healthy and that her face is as round as the moon, makes me happier than looking at the moon itself."

Hallyu Wave breaks in Japan

Technique

Seemingly almost every major K-Pop “idol group” has already put out or is planning some sort of major release in Japan, often singles—still a common format in Asia.

The Korean music industry is a world where record labels are akin to families. They sequester their signees away, often training them for years before their debut. It is where fan clubs have puzzling names including Kamilia, ELF, Cassiopeia and HOTTEST and, under these monikers, wage war on the blogosphere.

Though solo artists do exist, a majority of K-pop is comprised of a series of rival idol groups—most easily described as expansions of the 90’s wave of boy and girl bands in the States. The average idol group’s roster is usually six to ten members whose roles range from leader to singer to rapper to dancer. Yes, some members just dance.

But they are integral to each group’s success, which hinges more on their appearance, style and presentation than their actual musical abilities. Each single is released as a music video, featuring choreographed dances and storylines that can only be described as tragic. The video and the reaction to it define the success of the song. It’s only a hit if people are performing the dance routines—otherwise the artists might as well just sing ballads for TV shows.

The influx of Korean media first began in Japan a few years ago with the introduction of TV dramas and has been dubbed the Hallyu Wave. Though some artists like BoA and Tohoshinki (TVXQ) were major presences in Japanese media long before the Hallyu Wave hit, it was not until these dramas arrived that Korean culture became popularized in Japan.

The Hallyu Wave has already swept over much of Southeast Asia with no need for translations from Korean, as language groups are often smaller and native music industries are sometimes nonexistent. Japan is the first major market that Koreans are targeting where there already exists a well-established, homegrown music industry. Girl groups KARA and SNSD kick-started the trend of re-releasing past hits in Japan with translated lyrics in late 2010 with their respective singles “Mister” and “Gee.”

Each was hugely successful, largely due to SNSD’s “leg dance” and KARA’s “butt dance,” both easily imitated, recognized and parodied. Korean debuts have since become a mainstay on Japanese charts. Many groups simply re-release translated past hits, which basically amounts to greatest hits albums. Original material is rare, but constitutes some of the best releases, showing a striking dedication to a new market. Boy band BIGBANG’s recent Japanese album featured brand new material. It was No. 1 in Japan and is a highlight of the year’s releases.

Many releases are still slated for the rest of the year including girl group T-ARA’s re-release of “Bo Peep Bo Peep” and TVXQ’s new Japanese album “Tone” (both Sept. 28). Girl quartet 2NE1’s (pronounced 21 or To Anyone) second mini album re-release on Sept. 21 is one of the most anticipated debuts of the year and could be a major indicator for the future success of K-pop worldwide.

In Europe, pop groups are regaining traction and the Korean phenomenon has already hit with sold out shows in Paris from groups Super Junior and SNSD this summer. Americans have been able to remain intolerant of foreign music. Combine that with an apparent aversion to Asian entertainers and the chances of the Hallyu Wave’s success would seem slim. However, K-pop fills a role America is currently lacking—a pop group has not debuted successfully in years. 2NE1’s debut in Japan is an important touchstone as they are the ones most likely to find success in America.

It is doubtful CL, Minzy, Dara, or Bom will become household names to the extent of Ginger, Posh, Scary, Baby and Sporty Spice. In Japan even the biggest K-pop stars have not overtaken native super groups Exile or AKB48. But any success in Japan is huge considering generations of tenuous relations between the countries. Even now Japanese are back lashing against the Hallyu Wave with multiple gatherings in the past month at Fuji TV to protest airing of Korean dramas, citing a destruction of Japanese culture. But hopes are still high and if all goes well in the next few years it is quite possible America could become the next to ride the Hallyu Wave.

Selina Jen's strong circle of support

When the going gets tough, this starlet knows that she can always rely on her loved ones and fans

With her big day round the corner (Oct 31), all seems to be going well for this bride-to-be. After unveiling her latest wedding photos a few days ago, the Selina Jen's fiance Richard Chang recently revealed on his blog that she was feeling depressed and troubled.

Through her microblog Selina expressed: "I've always wondered when I will have the confidence to face my fans again. However, I can't help but to feel upset at things that happen suddenly."

After her update, Richard also updated his microblog with the following: "Each time people around me feel depress, I will feel the same way too. I am irritated because there are some troubles haunting us, but what can we do?"

Commenting on their updates, the lawyer revealed that his bride-to-be was "wronged" but refused to divulge further details on what happened. He then cryptically mentioned that Selina used to be optimistic, but her "power to heal herself has become slower now" and claimed that it has nothing to do with their upcoming wedding.

Deviating away from the topic, Richard then added that wedding invitations will be ready in a couple of days and they will send them out to their family and friends next week.

Fortunately, Selina has her band mates Hebe Tien and Ella Chen, as well as their fans, rallying round her during this difficult and emotional phase of her life.

When Hebe and Ella knew of Selina and Richard's participation in an auction organised by the Sunshine Foundation to help raise funds for burnt patients, the duo voluntarily donated limited-edition sport shoes and crystal necklaces to support their friend.

Selina's fans also touched her when they donated NT$1,031 (S$44) -- which symbolised the couple's wedding date -- to the foundation.

The singer shared, "I always cry when I think about what my beloved fans did for me."

Wu Chun chooses movie over picture book

Wu Chun, Han Geng two nights ago appeared in Kowloon Bay to attend the film MY KINGDOM (DAI MO SUN)'s premiere and attracted over 100 fans. However, Han Geng was ahead in popularity. The screams of both groups were deafening!

Wu Chun and Han Geng played games with fans and picked up spears to compete intense. However, with their chemistry they of course thought it was no big deal. They later also posed with spears. Wu Chun jokingly played Sun Wukong and looked convincing.

In addition, suspected Wu Chun nude photos were found online. Wu Chun was very surprised and said that he never saw them or posed for them. He asked whether they were just film stills? Reporters explained that someone probably doctored the photos. Wu Chun jokingly asked whether the person in the photo had a good figure. He even said that actually he would not pose nude. Earlier Mike Ho (Hor Kwun Cheung) had nude photos in his picture book. Wu Chun also had a fit physique but he said that he would not make a picture book. Even if he showed he would in a movie. Wu Chun asked Han Geng whether he would (make a picture book)? Han Geng said that he would not because his figure was not good.

Would Wu Chun bare all like Tony Leung Chiu Wai in LUST, CAUTION (SIK, GAI)? Wu Chun said, "It would depend on the movie and the level, I haven't thought about this now. Each actor at different level ould have different mentality, like new actors would want to make more movies, but later they would want to accept greater challenges." He felt that he could accept the soldier scene in BRAVEHEART because it was not dirty. Han Geng also agreed that it would depend on the character and the movie.

No bed scenes for Wu Chun's future girlfriend

If the Bruneian heartthrob was to have a girlfriend from showbiz, he will not let her film any bed scenes.

Over the weekend, actor Wu Chun was in Singapore to promote his latest idol drama Sunny Girl, which is currently airing on ChU, and movie My Kingdom.

Wu Chun lived up to his reputation of having a polite demeanor during his interview with xinmsn with occasional laughs and a farewell wave when it was time to go.

In short, Wu Chun was in no way similar to the arrogant wealthy second-generation character he plays in Sunny Girl. Taiwanese actress Rainie Yang stars opposite him in this series and plays the servant girl, whom he "tortured" initially but later falls in love with.

He was worried initially that the actress would be cold and difficult to work with, but his fears were left unfounded. Commenting on his first collaboration with Rainie, Wu Chun expressed that she is very bubbly and easy to get along with.

Wu Chun also gave his "first time" to Rainie, that is, the actor was slapped on the face for the first time in his life.

When xinmsn commented that he should be used to the pain, since he filmed a number of fighting scenes, Wu Chun exclaimed, "That's different! It hurts more to be slapped!"

Vicki Zhao tours Taipei with her family

After her imaging session, Vicki met up with her family -- including her husband, daughter and friend -- and took them on a tour around Taipei. Two years after her marriage to Singaporean businessman Huang You Long, Chinese actress Vicki Zhao clearly has no plans to give up on showbiz.

Not one to rest on her laurels, the busy actress secretly went to Taipei last week to attend the costume fitting for her new movie Love. Last Friday, a member of the public tipped the media off after spotting the actress at a restaurant in eastern Taipei. When reporters arrived on the scene, Vicki was already prepared to leave for Taoyuan International Airport.

The actress was spotted making a couple of phone calls, while waiting in the airport. An hour later, Vicki's daughter appeared from the custom checkpoint's exit. The actress went up to give her child a hug and a doting peck on the cheek before leaving the airport with her friend and daughter.

The trio later met up with Vicki's husband at a restaurant in Linsen Road to enjoy local Taiwanese delights. Two hours later, the group let the restaurant and headed to W Hotel for a rest.

The next day, Vicki and her family went shopping and her Huang was seen carrying their daughter at Hermès, while Vicky and her friend shopped for shoes. The actress also doubled up as a tour guide, bringing her husband, daughter and friend around the city to have a taste of various Taiwanese snacks. Vicki even took them to Maokong, a popular place for tea, while they enjoyed the scenic view of Taipei from the mountain top.

Vicki later updated her microblog and shared a couple of anecdotes from her travel tales: "Taipei's scenic view is really beautiful. A meal I eat here is more than what I'd usually eat in a month. This place is a food heaven, but it's definitely hell for those who want to lose weight!"

KAT-TUN to host new variety show

KAT-TUN will host a new variety show on NTV, their first since “Cartoon KAT-TUN” ended in March 2010. The new show is tentatively titled “KAT-TUN no Zettai Manetaku Naru TV” and will have the members of KAT-TUN presenting people “you will want to imitate” and various goods, aiming to create new trends.

It seems that the members will be in charge of different areas based on their interests. For example, Kamenashi Kazuya will cover food and sports-related topics, Tanaka Koki will deal with music and recent hot spots, and Nakamaru Yuichi will handle new products and daily living.

Three guests on the show will determine which members presented something that “you would not want to imitate,” and those members will have to participate in a penalty game, possibly drawing on other recent trends.

Taguchi Junnosuke commented, “Our concerts got postponed this year, so the five of us were only able to release CDs, so I’m very happy that we are able to work together on something.” KAT-TUN has been a five-member group since last July, when Akanishi Jin officially left to pursue a solo career.

“KAT-TUN no Zettai Manetaku Naru TV” will air on Tuesday nights from 11:58pm to 12:29am, starting on October 18.

Johnny Kitagawa reveals new group: ABC-xyZ

Johnny’s & Associates president Johnny Kitagawa announced the formation of a new group on September 5, reports Asahi Shimbun and Chunichi Sports.

Kitagawa was at the opening of the latest Johnny’s Jr. stage show “少年たち 格子無き牢獄 (Shonentachi: Koushi naki Rougoku)” in Tokyo yesterday where he revealed his agency’s new group: a seven member group centred around the already exisiting four member group A.B.C-Z (excluding Kawai, who is currently out with a leg injury).

“(A.B.C-Z is a) group that has singing, dance, and acting talent. I wouldn’t be afraid to let them go overseas. It might be good to add a few members and call them ‘ABC-xyZ’. The ‘xy’ comes from ‘sexy’,” he said.

The group first began as A.B.C in 2001, and then in 2008, Ryosuke Hashimoto joined in. It has been reported although the group have not made their CD debut, their sharp dance moves and acrobatics have made them become an essential part of stage performances.

Yesterday, A.B.C.-Z member Fumito Kawai appeared on stage in a wheelchair, as he is still recovering from a leg injury from July. “I can’t stay still, I want to dance,” he said.

It has been reported it will be October before Kawai can make a full recovery. As for the new group, Kitagawa had hinted things could get going by 2012. “Kawai has to get better first,” he said.

The 28-year-old, who previously cried on a variety show, expressed his reluctance to part ways with his fans, and took to his Twitter, promising he "will come back safely", before leaving for a four-week basic military training.

Hee Chul might have entered military camp, but fans of the singer could still to know how he was getting on. Rain to be reinvestigated on embezzlement charges

Singer Rain will face reinvestigation on allegations that he embezzled funds at an entertainment firm in which he was the largest shareholder, the prosecution said Sunday. The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office ordered the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office Sunday to reinvestigate the embezzlement case involving the famous singer, which was initially dropped last December.

Rain is suspected of having received some 2 billion won ($1,880,000) in modeling fees from J Tune Creative on condition that the firm would start a textile business. Other investors of the firm claimed the fees were “excessive,” and the firm actually didn’t do any business. Rain is also facing suspicions that he pocketed company funds.

Last year, the Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office dismissed the case saying that Rain’s modeling fee from J Tune Creative was not excessive compared with the money he received from other companies for modeling. The office also said no signs of embezzlement of company funds were found after tracking the company’s bank accounts. The investors, however, filed an appeal to the higher prosecutors’ office requesting a reinvestigation.

The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office accepted their appeal and ordered a reinvestigation in the case, saying that there were suspicious areas regarding the contract for the modeling fee. Rain did not carry out the modeling contract as stated and the fee was too much compared with the average amount he received from other companies, the office said. The prosecution also added that an initial investigation failed to look into the fact that the company had paid for Rain’s lease of a vehicle and an office.

YG Entertainment confirms that Daesung will not promote this year

allkpop reported earlier that Big Bang’s Daesung has received a ‘not guity’ verdict for his involvement in the vehicle accident that killed motorcyclist Hyun. With all eyes on Daesung, many fans began vocalizing their wish to see Daesung reunite with his groupmates for promotions. However, YG Entertainment has firmly stated that Daesung will not be returning to the fold for the rest of the year.

On August 29th, YG Entertainment stated, “Regardless of his ‘not guilty’ verdict, Daesung does not have any activities planned for the rest of this year. Instead, Daesung will continue to focus on going to church.” Daesung has been attending church regularly to focus on his religious life due to the severe distress and heartache he felt from the situation.

The verdict ends a case that’s been dominating headlines since late May. After careful review, prosecutors decided that there wasn’t enough hard evidence to determine whether or not the motorcyclist had been alive or deceased before Daesung ran him over with his Audi vehicle.

Prior to Daesung’s accident, the motorcyclist had already sustained severe spinal injuries from a collision with a streetlamp, and was intoxicated with a blood alcohol level of 0.186%. Therefore, the nine members of the citizens’ prosecution committee all voted to drop the prosecution against Daesung altogether.
